It’s been a couple weeks since my last Soccer Mom Sommelier post, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been tasting any wine, I’ve just had so much to write about lately that my reviews got pushed back. I’ve really wanted to share this awesome find, so even though it’s only a Tuesday, I’m going to go ahead with it (one plus: you’ll have time to find it before the weekend if your curious!)
I’ve really been craving a French Rhone, but it can be tricky to find a nice one (or any at all) at the grocery store. The French section at our local supermarket is tiny, but on our last visit, I spotted this intriguing bottle on the very bottom shelf, coated in dust.
How does that song go?
There might be
a little dust on the bottle.
But don’t let it fool you
about what’s inside.
Forgive the corny reference, but it is so fitting for this M. Chapoutier “La Ciboise” Luberon Rouge, a delightful blend of Grenache and Syrah!
This wine is bursting with rich, dark fruit: black cherry, blackberry, and plum balanced by soft vanilla and cinnamon spice. A deep ruby to purple in the glass, “La Ciboise” boasts a thick, almost syrup-y consistency and a finish that lingers. It is both strong and subtle at the same time, precisely why you can’t help but love French wine!
I’m hoping since I was able to purchase this in suburban Texas, that it is not difficult to find elsewhere. The price is right (around $12 if I remember correctly), so you can impress unknowing company with your “fancy” French wine without breaking the budget!
I have another surprise for my next wine review– stay tuned!
