We ladies are known for loving our champagne (whether it’s the real deal from France or a sparkling from California) and really, what celebration is complete without a toast of bubbly? A few years ago I discovered a “new” sparkling wine (well new to me anyways) and it’s been my go-to special treat bottle. It’s sake! I LOVE regular sake with my sushi, and the addition of bubbles only makes it better.
If you didn’t know that there was such a thing as sparkling sake, don’t feel left out– it’s not incredibly common. I haven’t seen it on the menu of at least half of the Japanese restaurants I’ve been to. But now you know…you can thank me later 🙂
In addition to Asian markets, I’ve been able to find sparkling sake at most larger wine and beverage stores I’ve visited. The bottles are small (which I find to be a benefit as it creates an automatic limit…champagne is notorious for headaches if you overindulge) and very affordable– this particular bottle was $8!
One bottle is enough for two full flutes– perfect for sharing a toast! In comparison to traditional dry champagne, sparkling sake is much sweeter, with a smooth syrupy consistency. This week’s bottle (I’ve tried a few varieties over the years) is rich with tropical fruit flavors: banana, mango, pineapple. It’s a dessert in a glass!
Next time you’re planning a special event or if you’re looking to expand your palate, seek out a fun little bottle of sparkling sake. You may just find that it is your new favorite bubbly too!
