How to Make Amish Sugar Cookies
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Beat together the butter, oil, sugar and icing sugar.
Add an egg and the vanilla paste and mix until just combined.
In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar.
Combine dry ingredients with your bowl of wet ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.
Form the cookie dough into balls, using about one Tablespoon of dough for each.
Place on an ungreased cookie sheet, with about 2 inches of spacing between each cookie.
Bake for 8 minutes, until the edges just start to turn golden brown.
You’ll see that the cookies puff up nicely!
Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for a couple minutes before moving to a wire cooling rack.
Can you make this recipe without a mixer?
We used a stand mixer because we have one and love it, so why not? If you’d like to get the full experience of making the classic recipe as the early settlers would have, you can of course mix by hand. It just takes a little more muscle, that’s all!
Can you decorate them?
Sure! While this isn’t quite the same as the sugar cookies that you roll out and cut into shapes with cookie cutters, you can still add frosting or sprinkles for festive fun.
Since they’re round, they are perfect to decorate to look like Christmas ornaments!
Can you freeze the dough?
Absolutely! After you’ve mixed the cookie dough and formed the balls of dough, you can place in a freezer container.
When you’re ready to bake, place the balls of dough on a cookie sheet as you normally would. Simply add 2-3 minutes to your baking time to accommodate starting with frozen dough.
Can you freeze baked sugar cookies?
Yes, these cookies freeze well.
Whether storing on the counter or in the freezer, use an airtight container. I also recommend placing a sheet of parchment paper between layers so they don’t stick together.
They’ll keep for 3-4 days at room temperature or a few months in the freezer.
