Summer in Texas can be brutally hot and means we’re often stuck inside for three months of the year. So when we were offered the chance to review the NewAir 18″ Misting Fan (AF-520B), we were more than happy to oblige!
Assembly is required, but it’s surprisingly easy– I consider myself moderately handy, and I was able to put the fan together by myself in about ten minutes. Setup is even simpler: plug in to a normal electric outlet and connect the water tubing to a standard garden hose. Within fifteen minutes of opening the box, we were ready to go!
There are a variety of options which allow you to customize your experience: three air speed settings, a valve which controls the water flow (for light to heavy mist, or no mist at all), and an oscillating switch.
I enlisted a very enthusiastic six year old assistant to help with my product testing– though she wanted to be very close to the fan (she enjoyed getting wet), I would recommend sitting a little bit farther away or placing the fan off to the side.
We started with the fan on the lowest setting, and that was more than enough wind and mist for our relatively small patio area. The manufacturer claims that the NewAir AF-520B can cover up to 500 square feet and I don’t doubt it– this fan is powerful!
The product is very sturdy, so even if you have it on the highest setting and oscillating, it’s not going to fall over. Also, if it is in a heavily trafficked area or there are kids playing, it’s not going to be damaged if someone (or a soccer ball) bumps into it. This is a large fan (almost as tall as I am), but the design is sleek and the black color helps it to fade into the background.
Overall, I would recommend this fan for anyone who lives in a hot climate like us. We often have company over for summer birthday and holiday cookouts, but sometimes the heat can make these events uncomfortable and we end up with twenty people crammed into our living room! I’m excited to try the misting fan at our next get-together so we can actually enjoy the patio. Plus, I can already see the kids running and playing in the spray– I know I would have loved something like that in my backyard as a kid!
You could also use this fan indoors minus the misting function– I would imagine it would be perfect for gyms, warehouses, and other businesses that don’t always have air conditioning. In fact, my husband is already eyeing it for this exact purpose!
To demonstrate just how powerful this fan is (and how to use it), my assistant and I made this video:
