What is a Slow Cooker?
If you've ever heard the term "slow and low" in regards to cooking, then you've already got an idea of the basic concept behind a slow cooker.
A slow cooker is a stand-alone appliance that is designed to cook foods on low heat for a long period of time.
They're great for prepping a meal in the morning or even the night before and letting it cook while you do something else.
What is the Difference between a Crockpot and a Slow Cooker?
Crock-Pot is a brand name for a type of slow cooker that was released in the 1970s. The name "crockpot" has become a generic term for slow cookers, much like "Kleenex" became synonymous with tissues.
So, while all crockpots are slow cookers, not all slow cookers are crockpots.
What are the Best Foods to Cook in a Crockpot?
Just about anything really! The better question is what can you not make!
Our favorite recipes are listed below!
What Foods Should Not be Made in a Slow Cooker?
While you can make just about anything, there are a few items to avoid:
- Dairy – It is likely to curdle!
- Pasta — The long cooking time and steam will make pasta mushy.
- Seafood — Most fish and shellfish requires only a short cook time, so hours in a crockpot will be overkill.
- Anything with booze — The lid prevents evaporation and alcohol from cooking off.
Do You Need a Crockpot Liner?
I find slow cookers easy to clean already, so I don't bother with liners. It's extra waste and an extra step!
