Fruit Infused Water (3 Ways)

Hot weather is a constant here in Houston, Texas. Our summer essentially lasts from April to September, with the peak of the season topping 100 degrees for days or even weeks at a time. I don’t know if I’ll ever quite get used to the heat and humidity here!

During the hot season, hydration is SO important. On days when I feel like I’m dragging, I usually realize that I haven’t drank enough water.

This summer we got into the habit of making fruit infused water to make sure we remember to drink enough. We already love water, but there’s something about these vibrant and tasty recipes that makes it even more enticing and refreshing!

We nicknamed our fruit infused water recipes “Vitamin Water,” because they are infused with a variety of vitamin rich fruit and vegetables — I’ve actually included our three favorite recipes here so you’re sure to find something your taste buds love.

This is also a fun idea that the kids can help make. My girls love choosing their own fruit and veggie mixtures to add to the pitchers. Your kids might also like to create their own special blends!

Why Is Fruit Infused Water Good For You?

Natural Vitamin Water is created simply by choosing your favorite fruit, veggie and herbs to add to chilled water. The following are some of our favorite fruit infused water ingredients, but you could experiment with your own combinations too.

Benefits to drinking natural vitamin water:

  • Provides minerals and antioxidants (which combat cell-damaging “free radicals”)
  • Increases fluid intake, ensuring your body and skin stay hydrated
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Aids in digestion
  • May help boost your immune system

Here are a few specific benefits from each of the ingredients:

  • Strawberries — help protect your heart, good source of manganese, potassium and vitamin C
  • Mint — aids in healthy digestion, may help with cholesterol and a natural oral anti-microbial
  • Oranges — contains high levels of vitamin C, contains potassium, may lower the risk for strokes and beneficial to blood pressure
  • Grapefruit — contains high levels of vitamin C,contains potassium, lycopene, choline, can provide health benefits for blood pressure, heart health and disease prevention
  • Cucumbers — contains lignan which is helpful to fight cardiovascular disease, offers a good source of vitamin K, strong antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties
  • Lemons — offer a good source of vitamin C, promotes heart health, helps prevent cancer, helps increase the ability to absorb dietary iron rich foods

Instructions – How to Make Fruit Infused Water

  1. Wash produce and slice veggies and fruits.
  2. Combine your chosen fruits, veggies, and/or herbs in a large mason jar. Fill the rest of the way with water and ice (if desired).
  3. Seal your jar tightly with a lid. Shake for about 1 minute to release the flavors. Shake gently, as to not bruise the fruit or break it up.
  4. Chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour to infuse refreshing flavors before enjoying.

Prep Tips

  • Storage – You can store your infused water in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. After that, the fruit will start to break down a bit and the flavor will not be as fresh. The good thing is it is easy to make a new batch!
  • Water – I recommend using filtered water for this recipe for the best taste.
  • Produce – Using organic fruits and vegetables helps keep this spa water as pure as possible. Be sure to thoroughly wash all produce to get rid of any dirt, grit, and germs beforehand.
  • Make it a Pitcher – To make a pitcher, triple the ingredient amounts from your chosen recipe, add to a large drink pitcher, stir, and refrigerate. You can also combine all of the fruits and veggies for a vibrant blend of vitamin infused water!
