Grinch Christmas Jello Shots
Jello shots are a flashback to my college daysย โ I think they were pretty much a staple at every party. Not that I went to a lot of parties or anything… wink, wink…
These Grinch Jello shots are such a fun departure from the “usual” holiday drinks. Plus they are super pretty and will look great on your Christmas party table! (Be sure to keep out of reach of the kiddos!)
If you’ve been looking for fun and festive Christmas Jello shot recipes for upcoming holiday parties, these are a must-try!!
What is a Jello Shot?
When making Jello shots, alcohol is used in place of some of the water when mixing the gelatin. This makes the final gelatin “boozy” like a cocktail.
Just like traditional shots or shooters, Jello shots are meant to be consumed all at once. Though you can’t quite drink them…it’s more like a slurp!
They’re fun and fruity tasting, and great for those who don’t like a strong alcohol taste. But they DO contain alcohol so they’re for grown-ups only!

Tips For Making Christmas Jello Shots
- We used theseย Edible heart confetti sprinklesย on top of our whipped cream – they make the perfect “Grinch hearts!”
- Be sure to allow your Christmas Jello shot liquid to cool to room temperature before pouring into shot glasses. If the liquid is still boiling it could melt plastic shot glasses or crack glass.
- We love break-resistant shot glassesย – they look like real glass, but are actually thick plastic so they’re much safer for parties.
- If you can find peppermint whipped cream at the store, it would be a great topping for this Christmas jello!
Non-Alcoholic Version
If you’re hosting a family party, you can totally make these nonalcoholic and serve as a party dessert instead. Here’s how:
- Make green gelatin according to package directions (using all water and no booze).
- Add a couple drops of peppermint extract while mixing the liquid gelatin.
- Pour into small plastic cups and allow to set.
- Top with whipped cream and heart sprinkles as seen here.

These sound yummy, but I’m just wondering how spiced rum and peppermint schnapps taste together?
It sounds strange but it works! ๐ You can also use vodka in place of rum if you’d prefer.
What flavor of green jello did ya use that when well with peppermint?
Hi Tara – We recommend lime, but you’re also welcome to substitute vodka for the rum if you like!
Hi Stacey,
How many Jell-O shots does one recipe yield?
Hi Kylie, it really depends on how much you pour into each glass. It could range from a dozen to two dozen – definitely enough for a group. Hope this helps!
This is adorable! Where would you find heart candy this time of year?
Hi Karen, I linked to similar sprinkles on Amazon in my ingredients list. Amazon is my go-to!
Followed the recipe to a T and my jello is not setting. Wondering if there was supposed to be cold water added, as that is how you normally make jello.
Hmm…I double checked the recipe and it’s correct as written. The alcohol is swapped for the cold water in this recipe. Any other factors that could have had an effect that you can think of?
Do you think tequila can be used instead?
Sure! Though I’m not sure if it would taste great with peppermint schnapps.
These shots are cute in theory, but the combo of lime with the minty schnapps and spiced rum was questionable ๐ Tasted very much like a weird cough syrup. Glad we tested it before our christmas party. Maybe lemon or citrus vodka would be better with the green jello.
Thanks for your feedback! You could absolutely use your favorite substitute for the rum.
The peppermint schnapps and spiced rum work well together. I mixed about half a shot of each together and a nice warm feeling and went down smooth. Making these for a Friendsgiving. Can’t wait to try them with the garnishes.
