Kid-Made Handprint Caterpillar

Handprint crafts are always a welcome gift because they are personal. We made handprint Christmas ornaments when the oldest girls were little and we still treasure them to this day!

This handprint caterpillar craft is the perfect keepsake idea for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Grandparent’s Day, etc. I especially love this craft because it is one that kids can really make themselves (or help make if they’re younger).

We made one handprint for each girl – so our caterpillar has three sections. However this is an open-ended craft and you can make as many segments as you like to represent each child in your own family.

This would even be a fun classroom craft to make an extra-long caterpillar representing every student!

Step-by-step Instructions:

Have your kid(s) trace their handprints onto colorful cardstock. We use thick cardstock instead of construction paper because it is sturdier, but you can use any type of colorful craft paper that you have on hand.

Cut out handprints – as many as you’d like! We did one for each child.

Cut out one circle (about 4-5″ in diameter) for each handprint, as well as one additional circle to be the head. Glue one circle on top of the wrist area of each handprint.

Now glue the circles together to form the caterpillar’s body, with the handprint fingers facing downwards to be the legs. Glue on the caterpillar’s head.

We used a black marker to draw on the caterpillar face – you could use paint, google eyes, etc. to make yours unique. We then used 2-3″ pieces of black pipe cleaners topped with small pom-poms to form the antennae.

Finally, each of the kids wrote their names/initials on their handprints.

You can follow our example or add your own fun customizations with stickers, markers, glitter, or any art supplies you like!
