Inside: Thinking about tutoring for your child? Here’s how Huntington Learning Center can help your child achieve REAL results and higher test scores.
For over four decades, Huntington has been a leader in tutoring and test prep in the Houston area.
You’ve likely driven by one of their locations or seen the name. Perhaps you’re curious — what exactly goes on at Huntington Learning Center? Is it something that can benefit my child?
Those are both questions I had when my oldest daughter and I visited Huntington Learning Center’s West University Place location for the first time.
6 Things that Surprised Me About Huntington Learning Center
The Huntington experience is so much different than I expected! That’s why I wanted to share with you what surprised me and what I love about the programs!
1. It’s more than just tutoring.
Yes, Huntington Learning Centers are known for their tutoring services. Founded in 1977, Huntington is a trusted name in tutoring in the Houston area.
However, I was surprised to learn that Huntington provides SO much more than just tutoring services!
In addition to tutoring, Huntington Learning Centers offer:
- Test prep
- Study skills and organization
- Time management
- ADHD support
Your child’s program at HLC is custom tailored to their individual needs and learning styles, so they’ll see the best results possible. Programs are available for all ages.
How it works:
- During your child’s initial visit to Huntington, they’ll complete a comprehensive academic evaluation that pinpoints strengths and weaknesses.
- Next, your HLC director will meet with you to create a customized program to meet your child’s specific needs.
- You’ll set a schedule that works for you, and payment plans are available.
- Your child will attend regular tutoring sessions (twice a week is recommended), learning at their own pace with certified instructors.
- Huntington communicates with you every step of the way — providing regular progress reports.
- Watch as your child grows in skills and motivation by leaps and bounds!
2. Your child can benefit from Huntington Learning Center even if they have straight-As.
Our oldest daughter finished 4th grade with straight-As, so I thought we were doing pretty good in the education department.
Wendy Tilford, director of the West University Place location, explained that good grades can often be deceiving.
Standards for grading can vary widely from school district to school district, and between public and private schools.
Because of these varying standards, as well as the increasing competitiveness in college admissions, students may end up with “skill gaps.”
This became pretty obvious when I asked my daughter what they worked on during one of her first sessions at Huntington. Nope, it wasn’t multiplication or division, but rather telling time with an analog clock, reading temperature on a standard thermometer, and how to use a ruler.
Would you believe that those are things students weren’t taught in my daughter’s elementary school?
Even though so much in our world, like clocks, are often digital now, I still think it’s important to completely understand the concept of temperature and time, and be able to read that data in any format.
Plus, those are the kinds of simple things that could stump kids on a test!
3. Huntington’s tutors are all certified teachers
Your can be confident that your child is getting the best help possible at Huntington because they only hire certified instructors.
HLC’s tutors all have degrees from four-year colleges, plus they are certified by the state and/or Huntington. HLC locations are accredited by either Middle States Association or Western Association of Schools and Colleges – the same organizations that accredit the vast majority of U.S. schools.
4. Huntington is your child’s advocate.
When your child is enrolled in a Huntington program, the director will meet with your child’s teacher(s) and school personnel to make sure that everyone is on the same page. (With your permission, of course).
Huntington is an advocate for your child to make sure that they’re getting the best education possible, every step of the way.
5. Huntington gets results.
Whatever your child’s specific goals, if they stick with their program, they will see results — and those results can be pretty incredible!
Students that were on the brink of repeating a grade have completely turned things around to not only pass, but excel in that grade.
Test scores are another area where your student can achieve amazing results with Huntington Learning Centers.
On average, Huntington students improved SAT scores by 226 points and ACT scores by 5.3 points. Those numbers can make the difference in getting accepted to a dream school or even earning a scholarship.
In fact, Huntington students have been awarded over $140 million in scholarships!
I used national average scores (1040 for SAT and 21 for ACT) as my starting point for the above chart.
I love looking at charts because you can literally SEE the results! It’s so exciting to see how much Huntington Learning Centers can improve test scores!
6. Your child will LOVE going to Huntington!
The first time I took my daughter to Huntington Learning Center, I’ll admit that I was a little worried she wouldn’t want to go to an educational program after spending all day at school.
Boy was I shocked when I picked her up afterwards and she was beaming from ear to ear!
“I LOVE it mom!!” she exclaimed when I asked what she thought after her first day.
We are a month into the program now, yet that enthusiasm hasn’t faded a bit. My daughter loves her twice-weekly visits to Huntington and looks forward to them.
Creating a LOVE of learning in kids is what I consider to be the biggest success of all!
