Alphabet Mazes Letter Recognition Game
I’m the oldest of three children and growing up I loved to play teacher to my brother and sister. One of the ways I helped my younger brother learn to say his letters was through “Alphabet Mazes” that I drew by hand. Because I drilled him every day, he probably learned his alphabet far earlier than my sister and I!
It’s such a simple project, but it really does make learning fun! Even better, you can involve older siblings by recruiting them to create the mazes, so it is an activity everyone can do together.
Here’s what you need to make Alphabet Mazes:
- Construction Paper
- Markers (this telescoping marker tower is so cool!)
- Stickers or other decorations to jazz up your mazes
To make alphabet mazes, simply draw a maze on paper as you normally would. Then, write single letters spaced throughout the path. As your child goes through the maze, they have to say each letter out loud before they are able to continue.
Here is an example of a beginner-level alphabet maze:
I didn’t worry about making them look “perfect” — they’re just going to get written on and torn up after all. This maze is short, so it only has some of alphabet, in no particular order.
However, I would make multiple mazes and we could do a different one each day to keep it fresh and to get through all the letters. Since I have daughters, I put a fairy at the end of the maze waiting to be rescued, though for my brother this activity usually involved Batman, Power Rangers, and dinosaurs!

I made the path much trickier, and included the alphabet A-Z. There are even decoy letters so all routes seem like they could be correct at first glance!
Writing this post brings back so many memories of my own childhood and how much I loved learning! I really did think I would grow up to be a teacher for the longest time! Though in a way, as parents we all are teachers. 🙂
