Crockpot Chocolate Cake

The ultimate decadent chocolate cake – and it’s foolproof! Our slow cooker chocolate lava cake is rich, gooey, and literally overflowing with fudge-y goodness!

There is nothing else that gets me excited dessert-wise like a decadent chocolate cake. The more chocolate, the more Hershey’s Kisses, the more fudge, the better! I even love cookies that are made with chocolate cake, like these Texas Sheet Cake Cookies!

We don’t eat out a lot, but when we do, I always have room for dessert. My sister and I joke that we were born with a second, “dessert stomach.”

Restaurant desserts can be hit or miss, but it’s hard to mess up a molten chocolate lava cake. That’s always a safe bet for a satisfying chocolate treat!

But you don’t have to wait for a night out to enjoy a drool-worthy chocolate lava cake — it’s actually super easy to make one at home in your crockpot! This may or may not be a good thing…haha!

This crockpot lava cake is incredibly simple to make, just mix, add to the crockpot, and cook! This recipe is perfect for novice bakers because it is nearly impossible to mess up! Plus, you don’t have to heat up the big oven, which is a great thing during summer or holidays when you want to use the oven for something else.

So let’s get started!

Instructions (How to Make Chocolate Cake in the Slow Cooker)

First, watch our quick video demo to see how we made our slow cooker chocolate lava cake. Then keep reading for photo step-by-step directions. A printable copy of the recipe is available at the bottom of the post.

To Prep: Before pouring your batter into the slow cooker, make sure that you’ve coated the dish liberally with non-stick cooking spray. This will keep the cake from sticking to the sides.

  1. Add cake mix, milk, egg, oil, and pudding mix to bowl of stand mixer and beat on low for 1 minute. You can also use a large bowl and a whisk – I just like to make it easy with an electric mixer!
  2. Increase mixer speed to medium and blend for 2-3 more minutes, until the cake batter looks glossy.
  3. Pour or scoop cake batter into the slow cooker and spread evenly.
  4. Sprinkle the top of the cake with chocolate chips – you don’t want to stir these – then cover and cook on low for 2 1/2 hours.

Prep Tips

  • Serve with — We love to serve in a sundae glass and top with whipped cream and chocolate fudge sauce! You could also make a hot fudge cake sundae by adding a scoop of ice cream.
  • Make it gluten-free — Simply use a gluten free chocolate cake mix! Chocolate pudding mix should be gluten free, but you may want to check the ingredients just in case.
  • Make it dairy free — Use your favorite non-dairy milk in place of the whole milk. We like cashew milk or coconut milk because of the rich flavor and creamy texture. You may also want to look for a vegan pudding mix, as many instant pudding mixes contain dairy ingredients.
  • Customize your cake — Try different types of chocolate chips, caramel chips, mini peanut butter cups, etc. Top your cake with chocolate syrup and whipped cream!

  1. Made this for a crock pot cook off party and won the award! My only question is, do you know if it takes longer to cook if you double it? I was asked to bring a double batch to a party tonight. Thank you!

    1. I’m so glad that you liked the recipe! I haven’t tried doubling the recipe, so I don’t have an exact time for you. I do think it would probably take a little longer to cook through, since there is more volume. I would keep an eye on it and check every so often after you reach the normal cook time.

  2. I cook it for 1 1/2 hours unplug slow cooker and keep it covered. Turns out really moist in the center. YUM YUM
