Edible Marshmallow Slime

Wouldn’t you know it, we had record-breaking rain on the Fourth of July this year!

Since we were stuck inside, my youngest daughter begged to make slime. What a perfect opportunity to try out the new marshmallow slime recipe I’d been working on!

We love edible slime, and we’ve made marshmallow slime with regular campfire marshmallows before. We’ve even incorporated mini marshmallows into our Edible Floam Slime too! Marshmallows are so versatile for edible slime recipes!

There are two ways to make marshmallow slime:

  1. Using regular marshmallows
  2. Using marshmallow fluff (no cook – our favorite!)

When you make marshmallow slime with marshmallows, you need to use a microwave to melt them. Marshmallow fluff is already soft and doesn’t require cooking, which is why we like this version best. (I’ll include both in the printable recipe at the bottom of the post).

Since microwaving is something my 4-year old isn’t going to handle on her own, we love our own version of edible marshmallow slime using marshmallow fluff — which is already in a more malleable form.

Result: a super-duper stretchy edible marshmallow slime  that requires no heating or cooking! Not only is this easy marshmallow slime recipe non-toxic…it’s edible! Actually, it tastes pretty yummy! Not that I recommend eating the whole batch, but if your kids lick their fingers it’s all good.

Since marshmallow fluff is sticky, this slime takes a little more kneading/mixing time to reach the perfect consistency than some other slimes – but when it does, it is SO worth it!

Marshmallow slime is one of the stretchiest edible slime recipes we’ve ever made!

Why Edible Slime?

If you’ve seen the slime recipes circulating on social media, then you’ve likely noticed that many of them contain harsh ingredients like borax. These can be irritating to sensitive hands, and they’re not the best idea for toddlers or young kids that still like to taste-test everything they play with.

When the slime craze first hit, my youngest daughter was only 2 years old. That’s why I decided to create SAFE edible slime for my girls to enjoy. Our first and most popular recipe — Edible Jello Slime — was such a smash that we decided to try other ingredients too!

Slime is a wonderful sensory activity and very soothing for kids (and grown-ups too!) Our edible slime recipes are all simple (most are 2-3 ingredients) and made with safe, food-based ingredients that are easy to find. In fact, you might already have many of the items we used in your own kitchen.

Marshmallow Slime Ingredients

For your convenience, I’ve included shop-able ad links to some of the products used to make our edible marshmallow slime recipe; read our disclosure policy here.

  • 1 cup marshmallow fluff
  • 3/4 cup cornstarch (plus more as needed)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

How to Make Edible Marshmallow Slime

A free printable copy of our marshmallow slime recipe is available at the bottom of the post, along with a handy video tutorial!

In the step by step photos below, I’ll show you how we made marshmallow slime with marshmallow fluff – as that is our favorite marshmallow slime recipe. However, I include two versions in the printable recipe later in the post.

Add marshmallow fluff, powdered sugar, and 1/4 cup cornstarch to mixing bowl. Stir together until flour and sugar mix into marshmallow.

Kneading marshmallow slime by hand

Add remaining 1/2 cup cornstarch little by little, and finish kneading by hand. (If slime is still too sticky to play with, continue to work in cornstarch 1 teaspoon at a time).

TIP: Coat hands with coconut oil before kneading and/or playing to prevent slime from sticking to hands until you’ve reached just the right ratio of marshmallow fluff to corn starch.

If slime thickens while you play, simply microwave for 5-10 seconds to soften.

Learn to Master Slime

There are three starter slime recipes that form the base for hundreds of awesome slime variations, like this Marshmallow Slime. Once you master these basic recipes, you can make almost anything!

Slime Making Tips

  • We used a silicone baking mat as our play surface for easier clean-up. (Marshmallow slime washes right off with water!)
  • You can’t really “mess up” making this recipe. If it’s too sticky, simply add more cornstarch. If it’s too thick, add a bit more marshmallow fluff or a bit of water.
  • Add food coloring for custom marshmallow slime in a rainbow of colors!
  • Just a note: this putty is taste-safe, but it’s not a food item and not meant to be eaten in large amounts. Always supervise young children when playing with this silly putty.

Marshmallow Slime Storage Tips

  • Keep refrigerated in an airtight container for 2-3 days. Heat in microwave for about 10 seconds, add a teaspoon of water and squish to rehydrate for more play time!
  • Always wash hands before playing with slime to help keep it clean.
  • Since this is a food item, it is perishable; check for signs of mold before reusing.

Slime Safety Tips

While this marshmallow slime recipe is technically edible, it’s not meant to be consumed as food. Always supervise kids when playing with slime, even taste-safe slime.
