With a five-year age gap between the girls, it can be difficult to find toys that they both can enjoy together. However, when we were invited to review the Magformers Inspire 100pc construction set, I had a feeling that this one might actually fit the bill.
As soon as we opened the box, both girls dove right in — Annabelle, literally:
She is fascinated with everything about this set: from the big cardboard box that’s perfect to sit on, to the colorful pieces she can snap together and take apart herself, to the two special LED squares that light up. The pieces are large and sturdy, so I don’t have to worry about her eating them (we are still in the teething phase).
Lilu has also been playing with the Magformers just about all day, every day since we got them. She has built some of the sample ideas in the guidebook, as well as her own unique creations straight out of her imagination. The instructions that come with the set have step by step photos that a seven year old can easily understand and replicate. It’s great for visual learning and practice following directions.
Lilu’s favorite thing to do is to create her own houses, towers, castles and the like. The wide range and number of pieces (100 pieces!) allow her to build substantial structures. The variety of shapes (there are not more than 6 of each shape except for the basic square) means that she has to problem solve when she runs out of her favorite or when there is a particular area that needs filled. It is an excellent engineering activity and creative thinking challenge. Plus it’s loads of fun (I know because I have joined in!) I am especially a fan of the rechargeable LED lights — they even change color!

I also like their Light Show set. I think my daughter would enjoy playing with any of these sets. She likes building/creating. It’s also something we can do together and enjoy. I’m sure we would probably start with a simple building or shape and work our way up.

The lights do make the sets extra fun! Good luck 🙂

My son likes to invent contraptions to make life easier. Like the other day, he built a “machine” with Legos that packs his lunch for him. I love seeing his visions and hearing him explain and demonstrate how they work. He would be thrilled to play with any of the Magformers sets.
