Marshmallow Playdough
Squishy, stretchy & safe to taste — marshmallow playdough is a fun and fluffy sensory activity that’s perfect for little hands!
Edible Marshmallow Play Dough
Yep you read that right! This is a homemade playdough recipe made with…marshmallows!
The result is a super fluffy, super stretchy cross between playdough and slime. It stretches like slime, but holds its shape like playdough.
I actually based this recipe off my viral marshmallow slime recipe, which was one of my favorite edible slime recipes. I love the unique consistency and how this playdough is smooth and shiny. It’s like no other homemade playdough I’ve ever created!
Another cool thing about this playdough is that it dries quickly if you leave it out, similar to modeling clay. I haven’t tried baking it though!
If you’re looking for a taste-safe alternative to commercial slimes and playdough, this homemade marshmallow playdough is a must try! It’s a great sensory activity for preschool and elementary age kids…but big kids will probably love it too. Honestly, I find it very soothing to play with as well!

- 1 cup mini marshmallows (or 6 jumbo marshmallows)
- 1/4 cup cornstarch (plus more as needed)
- 2 TB powdered sugar
- 1 TB coconut oil
- Gel food coloring (we used neon colors)
Helpful Kitchen Supplies
Instructions
- Add everything but food coloring to a microwave safe bowl.
- Heat for 20 seconds, stir, and continue heating in 20 second intervals until marshmallows soften and melt enough to mix into a cohesive dough.
- Stir in a few drops of food coloring.
- Remove from bowl and knead until smooth dough forms. Add more cornstarch as needed until dough no longer sticks to hands.
Prep Tips
- To keep dough from sticking to hands – Marshmallows themselves are sticky! But when we mix them with cornstarch, we get the stretchiness without the stickiness. If the dough still seems sticky after mixing according to the instructions, mix in a little more cornstarch, just like you would when making bread dough. You can also rub a little coconut oil on hands before playing, as this will also help keep the playdough from sticking to skin.
- Play With – I recommend using this marshmallow playdough on a non-stick surface. My kids love these Silicone Play Mats – they wash up easily and roll up for quick storage. We also love to use a rolling pin, cookie cutters, and our favorite figurines for play time.
- Storage – Because this playdough is made with food ingredients, it does not keep for weeks like regular playdough. However, you can place it in an airtight container or bag to save for another day. That being said, if you notice that the dough looks dirty, it’s probably best to toss it and make another batch. Washing hands before playing can help extend the life of your playdough.
- Safety – Even though marshmallow playdough is edible, it is not intended to be consumed as food. Think of it as a safer alternative to slime or commercial playdoughs – just in case kids try to sneak a taste, it is non-toxic. Always supervise small children when playing.
