Kool-Aid Playdough

School’s out and the weather’s hot. Why not keep everyone cool (literally) with some Kool Aid Playdough? Kids can mix, measure, and change the flavors of the Kool Aid Playdough to make lots of unique colors and scents! Cherry, grape, blue raspberry…the colors and scent combinations are endless!

We’ve made lots of slime recipes and homemade playdough over the years, but this has to be one of my favorite playdough recipes ever!

First, we started with our microwave play dough recipe as the base because it is so easy and fast โ€” it is my go-to homemade playdough recipe! I love making homemade play-doh in the microwave because you don’t have to mess with boiling water on the stovetop.

Then, instead of using regular food coloring, this time we used Kool Aid drink mix! Not only does it create incredibly vibrant colors, but it also adds delicious fragrance to our dough for a full sensory experience!

This is a super soft playdough and it keeps for weeks when you store in an airtight container! So much fun for kiddos…and very little prep for you!

Instructions

  1. Whisk together all of the ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl. Stir in one of the Kool-Aid packets for each color you want to make. So if you want to make multiple colors, you’ll want to make multiple batches (with the ingredient amounts listed above).
  2. Microwave for one minutes, stir, then microwave for 30 more seconds.
  3. If needed, continue microwaving in 15-20 second intervals until dough begins to form and pull away from sides of the container (or is no longer soupy).
  4. Allow the dough to cool enough so it is safe to handle, then finish kneading by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Eat Kool Aid Play Dough?

This homemade play dough smells fabulous thanks to the Kool Aid mixed into it! Made entirely with common food items, the flour is cooked, so it is technically safe to eat. However, it is not recommended to eat like a snack (and it probably doesn’t taste that great!)

Does Kool Aid Play Dough Stain?

The colors are so vivid, you might be wondering if this Kool Aid dough stains hands. Good news: once everything is fully mixed, this playdough is quite colorfast!

To be safe, I always have my kids wear play clothes when using any homemade play dough and we play on a safe surface (we love plastic play trays). We also wash our hands right away when we’re done. No staining!

Can You Use a Different Brand of Drink Mix?

Sure! We used Kool-Aid because it is easily recognizable and perfectly portioned to be just the right size for making one batch of playdough per packet. However you are welcome to use any brand of similar unsweetened drink mix.

Does Homemade Playdough Need to be Refrigerated?

When properly stored, your homemade playdough can last for weeks! I keep ours in a sealed plastic bag or airtight container at room temperature. It usually does not need to be refrigerated. However, if you live in a particularly humid climate, you may find that play dough lasts longer in the fridge.
