Puffy Sidewalk Paint
This homemade puffy sidewalk paint is vibrant, fluffy, and paints smoothly on sidewalks and driveways. Hours of fun and washes away with water!
Puffy Sidewalk Chalk Paint
This puffy paint reminds me of the puff paint we used to decorate sweatshirts when I was a kid. I loved collecting different colors and making my own custom clothes. I also loved the way the puffy paint looked – very smooth and a little bit 3-dimensional.
There’s something very soothing about painting with this puffy sidewalk paint! It goes on so smoothly and the colors are so vibrant and bright. I think mom had as much fun as the kids!
This is a liquid chalk paint that is designed for use on flat outdoor surfaces such as sidewalks and driveways. The colors are amazingly bright and vibrant – something about this mixture of ingredients really amplifies the colors of the chalk! Even though it’s so bright, this is a totally washable paint!
I’ve tried a few different recipes to make sidewalk paint over the years, but a lot of them use food coloring, so even though it’s technically washable, there is always some staining. That’s why I used actual sidewalk chalk in my recipe! I also added a little bit of salt to keep it from getting any weird smells from the flour mixture and to help preserve the paint. (I use salt as a preservative in my play dough recipes too!)
But the best way to find out why this is the best sidewalk paint is to try it! So let’s get to mixing!
Ingredients (Per Color)
For your convenience, Iโve included shop-able ad links to supplies used to make our sidewalk paint recipe; read our full disclosure policy here.
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup water
- 1 stick sidewalk chalk (crushed into powder)
- 2 cups foam shaving cream
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Helpful Supplies
- Squeeze Bottles
- Microplane or Cheese Grater
- Large Mixing Bowl
Instructions
- Use a microplane, zester, or cheese grater to turn the chalk into powder.
- In a large mixing bowl whisk together the cup of flour, cup of water, chalk, and salt.ย If needed, add more sidewalk chalk powder to your flour mixture until you have your desired color.
- Add shaving cream and stir until well mixed and an even color and no lumps remain.
- Pour into squirt bottle. I used a mixing bowl with a spout, for easy pouring, but you could also use a funnel to make sure everything gets into the bottle.
Repeat with the next color, and the next, until you have lots of pretty colors to paint with! Rinse the bowl or use a different bowl for each batch.
Prep Tips
- Chalk – You don’t have to go out and buy brand new chalk for this activity. This is a great way to use those old broken pieces of sidewalk chalk that you might have lying around the house!
- Process – If you don’t have a cheese grater or a zester, you can put the sidewalk chalk in a Ziploc bag and crush it with a rolling pin.
- Safety – Adults should handle the grating, as microplanes and cheese graters are very sharp. Handle carefully, especially when the chalk gets to be a small piece.
- Clean Up – This recipe is made with sidewalk chalk, so it is washable. It washes away easily with water if you do so the same day. If left in the hot sun, it may kind of bake onto the concrete and take a little longer to wash.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Does Sidewalk Chalk Paint Last?
This homemade puffy paint is best used the day you mix it.
Over time, the shaving cream will become less fluffy and the paint ingredients may start to separate. But I would bet that you’ll be having so much fun there won’t be any leftover paint anyway!
Is Puffy Sidewalk Paint Washable?
I made this recipe using all washable ingredients. These are all simple kitchen ingredients and household items. Shaving cream is made to be washed away, after all. You should just be able to blast everything away with the jet setting on your garden hose.
If you like your designs, you can leave them until it rains and the rain will help wash them away naturally. The colors stay remarkably bright over time! (I tested it out!)
However, if you want your driveway to be a blank slate again, I recommend washing after you’re done painting for the easiest clean-up. That way the colors don’t have time to stick. Again, everything is totally washable, but if the paint is left to bake in the sun, it will take a little more elbow grease to wash away.
