How to Make Christmas Ornaments Using Paper Straws
We create three different designs, so I’ll detail how to make each one below.
1. Christmas Tree
Cut green straws into smaller sections of varying lengths. We used 8 straw pieces for our Christmas tree ornament.
Glue the longest section of straw about 1/2″ from the bottom of a craft stick.
Continue gluing straw pieces, each one slightly shorter in length, to the craft stick. Leave about 1/4″ inch between each straw.
Glue a colorful button to the top of your tree to be the topper. You can use any shape or color button that you like.
Use tape or glue to secure a loop of ribbon to the back of the craft stick for hanging your ornament.
2. Candy Cane
Cut a candy cane shape using white cardstock. You’ll want the candy cane to be about an inch wide.
Cut red straws into smaller pieces, each just slightly longer than your candy cane is wide. We ended up using 11 straw pieces for our ornament, though this may vary for you depending on how big your pattern ย is.
Glue straw pieces to your candy cane shaped cardstock, to make the stripes. We placed ours about 1/4-1/2″ apart.
Glue or tape a loop of ribbon to the back of your candy cane ornament for hanging on the tree.
3. Angel
Cut white card stock in the shape of angel wings. We made one big piece, instead of two separate wings.
Glue a craft stick in the middle of your cardstock, with about an inch or so overhang on the bottom.
Cut gold straws that are different lengths (we used 7 pieces). Just like the Christmas tree ornament, glue these straws in a triangle shape on your angel ornament. Leave about 3/4″ of craft stick at the top.
Cut and glue a circle of white card stock, about an inch in diameter, at the top of your ornament, on the craft stick.
Glue a small loop of gold pipe cleaner on top, like a halo.
Glue or tape a piece of ribbon on the back of your ornament to use to hang on the tree.
Can I Use Plastic Straws?
Yes, you could use plastic straws for this craft too. We switched to paper straws in our household because we try to reduce plastic wherever possible, plus paper straws often come with cute patterns!
However, if you already have plastic straws on hand, this is a great way to use them (that won’t just end up in the trash can!)
