How to Create Your Own DIY Cell Phone Halloween “Boxtume” Using Amazon Prime Boxes

Staying at home means that we’ve been doing quite a bit of online shopping. And that means that we have a lot of extra boxes around the house!

Usually we break them down and take them to recycling once a month. However, now it’s October, we’re planning for our Halloween costumes. Amazon Prime boxes are PERFECT to repurpose into clever costumes, or “boxtumes!”

That’s right, to make a boxtume, all you need is an Amazon Prime box and simple craft supplies that you probably already have at home! Halloween costumes can be pricey, but you can DIY a really cute boxtume that rivals anything sold in stores!

Saving money, saving the environment, and creating a Halloween look that is sure to be memorable — we’re on the boxtume bandwagon!

When our family started brainstorming ideas, we came up with quite a few that would be easy to make with our old boxes:

  • Cell phone
  • Robot
  • Empire State Building
  • Toy building block
  • Video game characters

We took a vote and the winner was a cell phone! (Though we might try some of the other ideas later this month too!)

For your convenience in re-creating this project, we’ve included shop-able ad links to some of the products we used. Our disclosure policy is available here.

Here’s what you need:

First, choose a box that your child can fit inside. We had a couple Amazon boxes that were just the right size!

Paint the outside of your box black, silver, gold — any color you want for your phone. We used spray paint because we had some on hand and it coats large areas quickly.

Then, measure a piece of black poster board and trim so that it fits just inside the front of your box, like a phone screen.

Cut out squares to be your app buttons, just like you’d have on a real phone. Decorate with your favorite apps, like the Amazon or Prime Video apps!

We used a cutting machine to make our icons, but you can also freehand them, paint, or draw them onto your buttons.

Glue or tape everything in place on your box. First, glue down the piece of black poster board that makes the phone screen. Then glue the apps in place.

Use ribbon to create suspenders for your costume so that it hangs comfortably on your child’s shoulders when they’re wearing the boxtume. You’ll also want to cut arm holes in the sides of the box.

You may need to trim the box so that it fits snugly and doesn’t slide off your child’s shoulders. We also used packing tape to secure the flaps of the box so that it keeps its shape.

I love how our cell phone boxtume turned out and I think it actually looks like the real deal!

More Halloween Fun with Amazon

Boxtumes are just one way to recycle all those Amazon Prime boxes. You can also use them to build a haunted house or make Halloween decor for your house, such as a spooky ghost cut-out!

We’re not sure what Trick-or-Treat plans are for our neighborhood yet, so we’ve been planning some alternatives to Trick or Treating, just in case. Thank goodness for all of the Halloween content available to Prime members on Prime Video, Prime Reading, Prime Gaming, and Amazon Music!

With all of the Halloween fun that Amazon has to offer, we know that we’ll find just what we need for our dress-up movie night and ghost story telling!
