Snow Dough – Winter Playdough
Brr-illiant fun awaits!
Snow dough is a winter themed playdough recipe made with instant snow, which adds a fluffy texture to the playdough and a chilly feel. It’s almost like a blend of playdough and slime — you get that extra stretchy-ness like slime, but without the sticky mess!
I based this recipe on my favorite microwave playdough recipe. I love this playdough recipe because it is so easy to prepare, takes just a couple minutes, is practically fool-proof, and there’s no stovetop needed!
Supplies
For your convenience in creating these play dough recipes, we’ve included shop-able ad links to some of the products used; disclosure policy available here.
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 Tablespoons cream of tartar
- 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 Tablespoons cornstarch
- Blue food coloring – we use gel food coloring because it creates such rich, vibrant colors!
- Instant Snow
- Glitter (optional)
Kitchen Supplies Used
- Microwave safe bowl
- Microwave
- Snowflake Cookie Cutter
Instructions
To Prep: Make one batch of instant snow according to package directions. Set aside.
- Add flour, water, salt, cream of tartar, oil, cornstarch, and food coloring (if using) to a microwave-safe bowl and stir to combine.
- If using glitter, stir in now. Microwave for 1 minute and stir. Microwave 30 seconds and stir. Repeat as needed until playdough is cooked and begins to clump together when you stir it.
- Once playdough is cooked, add half of the instant snow and fold into the playdough with a spoon.
- Once playdough is cool enough to handle, finish kneading by hand.
You’re ready to play! Or you can use the rest of the instant snow to make a second batch of playdough like we did.
Prep Tips
- Instant Snow – You can find “instant snow” on Amazon (this is brand one we used) or at some craft stores. We made one batch of instant snow and used half of it for our blue playdough and half for our white playdough. The directions on our instant snow package called for 1 teaspoon of the instant snow powder and 1/3 cup water, but this may vary depending on the brand you buy. As long as you’re adding about 1/2 cup of prepared instant snow to your playdough, it should work out fine.
- If The Dough Is Sticky – When you add the instant snow, it might make the playdough a little bit sticky at first. If needed, work another Tablespoon of cornstarch into the playdough to help take away that stickiness. You can also microwave the dough for another 30 seconds. I also find that coating hands in oil before playing helps keep any playdough from sticking to hands, not just for this recipe, but any playdough or slime!
- Microwaving – Be sure that you use a microwave safe bowl to prepared this recipe. Adults should do this step. Handle the bowl with care, as it may become hot when you microwave it and cook the playdough.
- Storage – Keep this snow dough in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1-2 weeks. To extend the shelf like of your homemade winter playdough, always wash hands before playing. If it looks dirty or smells weird, it’s time to toss it and mix up a new batch!
- Safety – This playdough recipe is NOT edible. Do not taste. Always supervise children when playing with play dough.

Can I leave this out to get hard and preserve projects forever ? or will it decay ?
Stacey aka the Soccer Mom says
Hi Julie, this recipe isn’t designed to be modeling clay, so I’m not sure if it would work for that purpose.

Judy says
How much instant snow is needed?
Stacey aka the Soccer Mom says
I ended up using about 1/2 cup prepared Instant Snow per batch. But it doesn’t have to be exact!
Stacia says
I wonder if it would be better to add the instant snow once the play dough cools? It got very liquid like adding it before the dough was cooled. Thanks!
Stacey aka the Soccer Mom says
The snow does melt into the dough a little bit – that’s ok! It gives the dough an extra stretchy kind of texture.
