Easy Frozen Birthday Cake

We made this Frozen birthday cake for our oldest daughter’s 7th birthday — she’s been a HUGE fan of the movie and Queen Elsa since she first saw it!

Since it was Father’s Day weekend too, I wanted to make the preparations as easy as possible for the hubby. He usually does all of the cooking and baking, but I thought that I would try my hand at making a special (inspired by the movie of course) Frozen birthday cake for our special girl.

I’m sure you’ve seen pictures floating around the internet of elaborate Frozen cakes made to look like a doll’s skirt (with the actual doll sticking out of the top!)

They’re absolutely stunning — but way beyond my skill level.

So I decided to use box cake mix and create a marbled surprise inside, and coat the outside with blue frosting and M&Ms. It’s a much more manageable task, but it would still a princess-worthy cake!

Frozen Cake Ingredients

For your convenience, I’ve included shop-able ad links to some of the products used to make our Frozen Marble Cake recipe; read our disclosure policy here.

  • One box of white cake mix + ingredients listed on box
  • Blue food coloring
  • One can white whipped frosting
  • Blue accent frosting (I used this Betty Crocker Easy Flow Icing)
  • Blue M&Ms
  • White chocolate chips

How to Make a Frozen Inspired Marbled Cake

Prepared the cake mix according to directions on the box.

Pour one cup of batter into a small mixing bowl. Add blue food coloring to this small bowl until the batter is your desired shade of blue.

Divide the rest of the cake batter into two Round Cake Pans.

Pour the blue batter into each of your cake pans in a swirly pattern. Use a butter knife to slowly stir until the blue batter is spread throughout.

Bake according to directions on box. Allow cake to fully cool before frosting. (I used the entire can of white whipped frosting).

Add your decorations!

I picked out all of the blue M&Ms from two baking-sized bags (I served the extras in a bowl at the party, so they definitely didn’t go to waste!) I pressed the blue M&Ms and white chocolate chips into the sides of the cake like so:

I used blue accent icing to decorate the top and write Happy Birthday. The result was a Frozen birthday cake fit for a princess!
