Play Dough Fossils Identification Game

Summer is all about relaxation in our house! However, we still make the effort to challenge our brains on a regular basis – and this Play Dough Fossils Identification Game is the perfect mix of fun and learning!

This month we received a collection of underwater-themed books from the Parragon Books “Book Buddies” program. Perfectly timed to celebrate both Shark Week and the new Finding Dory movie (which Lilu saw for her birthday and loved)!

Included in our summer collection: Discovery Kids Shark Factivity Kit. We’re already fans of the Factivitiy sets, so this was a happy surprise!

Inside the Shark Factivity box is a set of replica shark teeth. There are two sizes of teeth, and each tooth is slightly different than the rest. My daughter Lilu and I needed a quiet activity to play while the little one napped, so we decided to make play dough fossils with the shark teeth and take turns guessing which tooth was used to make the print.

Play Dough Fossils Identification Game:

You need:

Start by rolling play dough into a small ball, then smashing it with a book so there is a flat surface.

Next, while the other player covers their eyes, press one of the shark teeth into the flattened play dough. Carefully remove the tooth to reveal a print.

Now the other person guesses which tooth was used to make the fossil. After they’ve guessed, it is their turn to make a print.

We also played this identification game with coins. Younger kids can practice telling the difference between pennies, dimes, etc. We were a bit trickier, using quarters with different state pictures on the back, so you had to look very closely to tell the difference.
