Summer is on the way, and in many places that can mean a much higher energy bill! However, there are a few little energy saving tricks I’ve learned over the years than can add up to big savings, even during the hottest time of the year. These things take almost no effort, but could help you lower your energy bill, so you’ll stay cool and your pocketbook will stay full!
Four Simple Ways to Lower Your Energy Bill:
Turn it off!
This might sound simple, but how many times have you walked out of the house and forgotten to turn of the lights? Or left the TV on when you went to another room? My husband does these things often (sorry honey!) and it drives me crazy because it wastes energy…and money! Get into the habit of turning off lights and electronics that you’re not using, even when you’re home.
Turn it up!
The thermostat, that is! Start by bumping up the temperature one degree from your usual setting — chances are, you won’t notice the difference, except on your electricity bill! When you leave the house, turn the thermostat way up! It costs less to cool the house down slightly when you return then it does to have the AC cranking full blast when you’re not even there to enjoy it.
Did you know that appliances use energy the entire time they’re plugged in, even if they’re powered down? (Up to 10% of your electricity bill!) The big energy hogs are televisions, computers, video game consoles, coffee makers, stereos, DVD players. To make things easier, use power strips that allow you to unplug many things at once instead of having to unplug every individual item one at a time.
Switch it up!
This is a big one! If you live in certain states that participate in the Energy Choice program (known as “deregulated states”), you can shop around for the electric/natural gas supplier that offers the best rate!
Suppliers, like IGS Energy, compete in an open marketplace, and have more options to purchase the energy more efficiently and cost-effectively — which results in lower prices for the consumer. A supplier does not compete with your utility company, instead, they work with them by purchasing the natural gas and electric supply products that your utility delivers using their existing infrastructure.
IGS Energy is one of the largest independent suppliers in the US, offering natural gas, electricity and home protection products to over 1 million residential and commercial customers in 10 states. Not only is IGS Energy a respected name (1 million customers says a lot!), but they go a step beyond by giving back with IGS Companies community support initiatives like sustainable energy programs.
Switching providers is easy! For me it took a five minute phone call, but you can also switch online at IGSenergy.com, by mail, or in person with a local home energy consultant. When I chose a new energy provider, I was able to lock in a low rate for a year, instead of having my rate fluctuate with the unpredictable market — this is so helpful for budgeting!
With the heat of summer on the way, now is the time to research your options and make sure you’re getting the most for your dollar! Find out more about energy choice and deregulation and the best options for you and your family.
