The Easiest Way to Clean Baby Bottles & Sippy Cups

Mom Hacks

As a new mom, it can feel like you’re scared of everything! I remember being terrified that my baby would get sick because I wasn’t getting her bottles and sippy cups clean enough. However, after seeing some of the recent stories in the news about mold in sippy cups, perhaps it wasn’t so unreasonable to be worried after all!

For the first few weeks after my baby was born, I boiled every piece of bottle equipment every night. However, that quickly became exhausting when I went back to work outside the home.

To make it simple for new moms (or moms looking for an easier way), I’m sharing the tricks to clean baby bottles that I’ve learned over the years.

Get the run-down on common methods to clean baby bottles and sippy cups. What's the easiest way to prevent mold? How often should you sterilize?

How to clean baby bottles and sippy cups:

Boiling – This method will sterilize baby bottles and parts, but is not a cleaning method in itself. Bottles need to be pre-washed before sterilizing. Once bottles have been washed, submerge all parts completely for at least ten minutes in boiling water. Allow to air dry.

Dishwasher – This is adequate for a quick clean, but will not kill all bacteria. I’ve also noticed that the dishwasher doesn’t always clean gunk that gets into grooves where the lids connect to the bottles. (Be sure to check that your bottles and sippy cups are dishwasher safe).

Hand Washing – Washing by hand with hot soapy water is also fine for a quick clean. Since this method does not fully sterilize bottles or cups, it’s still important to boil on a regular basis. I found that I could get bottles cleaner by hand (as opposed to the dishwasher), but it’s time consuming! However, it’s almost impossible to clean the inside of sippy cup straws or bottle nipples without special tools.

Cleaning Tablets – FizzWizz cleaning tablets are by far the easiest way I’ve found to clean baby bottles and sippy cups! Simply fill a bottle with 2-4 ounces of water and add one FizzWizz cleaning tablet. Shake well until fully dissolved, then empty and rinse. Wipe outer surfaces with a FizzWizz wipe if desired.

FizzWizz tablets are plant-based and 100% natural. Their “secret” ingredient is actually used to clean the milking apparatus in organic dairy farms – so it makes sense that it would be effective at cleaning milk residue from baby bottles!

FizzWizz tablets and wipes are available in a value set on Amazon; click HERE for more information and to purchase. These would be an awesome gift for a new or expecting mom!

My system to clean baby bottles and sippy cups:

  • DAILY: Clean baby bottles and sippy cups after each use with FizzWizz cleaning tablets. The effervescent bubbles get deep into every nook and cranny, so you can be sure that everything is clean.
  • WEEKLY: Sterilize bottles and certain hard to clean parts of sippy cups, like straws with the boiling water method once a week. (Always be sure to read packaging to be sure that your bottles and cups can tolerate boiling. Some sippy cup brands advise against contact with hot liquids).

Thank you to FizzWizz for sponsoring this post! All opinions expressed are my own.
