4 Easy Ways to Simplify Housework

I have a love-hate relationship with housework. On one side, a clean home brings me such happiness. On the other hand, it can take a lot of work to maintain a clean home with kids!

However, I think it IS possible to enjoy a clean home without spending all day doing chores. The key is finding ways that simplify housework, so you work smarter, not harder!

4 Ways to Simplify Housework

You CAN have a clean house with kids...without spending all day doing chores! Try these do-able tips to simplify housework so you can enjoy your home!

Clean as you go

Sure, there are some days I really, really don’t feel like cleaning. However, letting the clutter build only creates a bigger task when you finally do break down and get to work. Every night I do a few things which make the house feel cleaner immediately and keep major messes from forming.

Even better, tidy up as you go about your day. By this, I don’t mean you need to walk around with a feather duster and attack each speck of dirt as it falls. A realistic example would be to put a dirty dish directly in the dishwasher instead of setting it in the sink for later.

Everything has a place

Almost everyone I know has their “junk drawer” or their counter/table/etc. where they toss stuff when they don’t know where else to put it. In my case, one of our kitchen counters fills up very quickly with this miscellaneous “stuff.” If all this stuff had a home, it wouldn’t pile up and create clutter.

One of the easiest ways I’ve found to prevent clutter is by using strategically placed boxes and baskets. My husband and I each have a caddy in the bathroom to keep the counter and sink area clear. I have soft woven baskets in the living room for magazines and kids toys. Not only is it incredibly simple to just toss belongings in their designated box or basket, but you can find some stylish containers that actually beautify your living space.

Find products that do double-duty

At the risk of sounding a tad over-the-top, I’m going to have to gush about a new product I discovered (because it is awesome!!) When I was invited to try out Powerizer, a new dishwasher and laundry detergent from the original creators of OxiClean, I’ll admit to being skeptical at first. How could one product work in two very different appliances?

Let me just say that I was blown away! My first test with Powerizer was on a load of white clothes, and I didn’t have to use any extra products like bleach or brighteners. Even my socks came out whiter than I had seen them in a long time! I was also thrilled with how it performed in our dishwasher (more on that later). Plus, one little canister of Powerizer takes up way less space in our cabinet than the big jugs we previously used separately for our dishwasher and washing machine.

Try these do-able tips to simplify housework so you can enjoy your home! When you have one product that does the same work of 5 different products, you save time, money, and storage space! I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited about a cleaning product!

Clean smarter, not harder

With housework, my husband and I are a team and he definitely does his fair share. However, when it comes to dishes, he doesn’t always pre-clean, so I often have to re-wash things that still have food stuck to them even after going through the dishwasher. Basically that means that both my husband and I wasted time since it took both of us to finish one chore.

My second test with Powerizer was to see how it would do in the dishwasher after my husband loaded it. (Meaning, there was still gunk on some of the dishes). I did a happy dance when I opened the dishwasher to find not only were all the dishes clean, they were spotless. Powerizer doesn’t leave behind residue or film, so you don’t need a finishing agent or to spend extra time polishing.

Other ways we clean smarter:

  • Have kids help pick up their own toys and organize their own room. We started teaching our girls responsibility at a young age by giving them tasks they could handle. Even though it might have been a little extra effort at first, as they grow older, kids can actually be very helpful. The best part is they enjoy participating while they’re young!
  • Wait to clean high traffic areas at the end of the day. If I tried to clean our kitchen early in the day, I ended up having to clean again after dinner!

I won’t pretend that my house looks magazine-ready at all times, and I’m ok with that (it’s a real lived-in home folks)! However, I still want it to feel clean and organized…and I don’t want to spend half my day to accomplish that. That’s why I practice these do-able techniques to simplify housework for our family…and you can too!
