Helpful Bartending Tools

- Stainless steel 2-piece cocktail shakerย ย โ This is the style I learned to bartend with and still prefer, but you can use a cocktail shaker with a built-in strainer too. Whatever youโre comfortable with will work!
- Margarita Glasses – You can really use any type of glassware that you like, but this cocktail looks so pretty in a traditional margarita glass with a stem and wide mouth.
Instructions
- Wet the rim of your margarita glass. You can use water, but simple syrup is sticky and works better. While it’s still wet, roll the rim of the glass in a plate of sprinkles.
- Add the tequila, triple sec, chocolate vodka, milk & cake mix to a cocktail shaker with ice. Be sure to use a cake mix that is labeled “safe to eat raw.”
- Shake well to chill and mix, then pour the contents of the shaker into your prepared margarita glass.
- Garnish with whipped cream.

Prep Tips
- Cake Mix – Because we are not baking the cake mix, you’ll want to look for a cake mix that is labeled safe to eat raw. This is very important because untreated flour or cake mixes can contain food-borne germs. And of course, you can always skip this ingredient if you prefer. It won’t taste exactly the same, but the milk and the chocolate vodka will still provide birthday cake flavors.
- Tequila – You really can use any type of tequila that you like for this recipe: blanco (silver) or gold. Using a darker tequila will make the finished drink a little bit darker in color as well.
- Vodka – If you don’t have chocolate vodka, you can use regular vodka or another flavor. Vanilla vodka would also work well in this recipe. If you want a less strong drink, you can omit the vodka altogether and add more milk instead.
- Garnishes – This drink looks fabulous with traditional birthday cake garnishes such as whipped cream, sprinkles, and even a candle for a special touch!
- Frozen Variation – Make it a frozen birthday cake margarita by blending with ice cream instead of milk! Simply add more ice cream as needed until you have the consistency of a milkshake.
