The 7 BEST Christmas Decoration Storage Hacks

It seems like every year our family accumulates more and more Christmas decorations!

This year we added a big light-up Rudolph and matching Santa Claus to our outdoor decor collection. They were so cute that we didn’t even stop to think:

Where are we going to put these giant decorations after Christmas?!

As you can see from the photo above (our actual hallway closet), our home storage options are already at capacity!

That’s why we had to get creative this year and figure out a better system to organize and store our Christmas decorations.

How to Organize Christmas Decorations and Store them (without Taking up All Your Free Space!)

The following are some of our own ideas, as well as some super smart Christmas decoration storage tips from the best home and family bloggers I know:

Keep Wrapping Paper Neat with Toilet Paper Rolls

Our leftover wrapping paper usually ends up smashed in a corner of the closet, with the ends flapping and getting caught on the door, other boxes, etc.

I love this toilet paper tube trick from Thrifty Jinxy to tame the loose ends of your wrapping paper rolls so they’ll be usable next year!

Use Wine Box Dividers & Egg Cartons to Protect Ornaments

Instead of tossing all your potentially breakable Christmas ornaments into one box, use a cardboard divider from wine shipping boxes to separate and protect them.

This is also an excellent way to organize your ornaments by color, type, size, and more!

Smaller ornaments can be kept safe and sound in empty egg cartons – brilliant!

Roll Christmas Lights in a Ball to Prevent Tangles

Have you ever pulled your Christmas lights out of storage only to find that they’re a tangled mess?

It happens to me every year, and I have no idea how! I promise that I put our lights into storage boxes in neat loops!

Nikki at Tikkido shares on her site how she wraps Christmas lights into balls to save space and prevent tangles. I’m definitely going to borrow her idea this year!

Use Specialty Boxes for Odd Shaped Items

Instead of trying to cram wreaths and other uniquely shaped items into regular storage containers, it’s worth picking up boxes that are specifically designed for the task.

Susan at Organized31.com suggests hitting the after-holiday sales to save big on storage containers like wreath boxes and other specialty bins.

This year we had trouble finding boxes big enough to store our light-up Rudolp yard decoration. We bought a discounted floor model because it was the last one in stock, so it didn’t come with a box.

Fortunately, the helpful folks at Callbox Storage had our back! They provided us with a free wardrobe box (the perfect fit for Rudolph) when they came to pick up our holiday decorations.

Color Code Storage Boxes by Holiday

The easiest way to start organizing your Christmas decor is to separate it from all of your other holiday items. Ann at Ann’s Entitled Life uses large plastic snap-closure boxes (to prevent spills) in a different color for each occasion.

Once you’ve got your Christmas decorations boxed and separated from other holiday items, it’s time to move on to the next step…

Label Everything!

I’ll admit, this is an area where I can improve! Our Christmas boxes are all labeled “Christmas,” but that tells us nothing about the specific items inside each box.

Ornaments?

Christmas lights?

Who knows until we open each box!

Labeling Christmas decoration storage boxes ends the guessing game and means you’ll be able to easily find the exact item you need, when you want it.

Free Up Closet Space with Full Service Storage by CallBox

Once you’ve safely packed up all your holiday decorations, get them completely out of the way!

We decided to do things differently this year and send most of our Christmas decorations with Callbox Storage — instead of cramming them all into our hallways closets.

This is my first experience with any type of off-site storage, and it couldn’t have been any smoother or easier!

Once we had all our Christmas decorations organized, packed, and labeled, I set up a free pick-up appointment at CallboxStorage.com. The very next day our pickup crew arrived early, which was definitely a pleasant surprise (when does that ever happen with scheduled services?!)

Our Callbox reps tagged and scanned each of our boxes so we can instantly check our inventory online anytime. They even provided a large box to store our precious Rudolph (every new customer can get up to 2 complimentary cardboard storage boxes). Then they loaded up the van and were on their way. Simple as that!

CallBox Storage full service storage

I’ve got to say, the full-service storage experience made me feel like a total VIP!
