Copycat Wendy’s Frosty
This quick and easy homemade Wendy’s Frosty tastes just like the real thing — rich, creamy, and chocolate-y! All you need is four ingredients and a blender!
Homemade Wendy’s Chocolate Frosty
Growing up one of my favorite treats was a Wendy’s Frosty. There’s just something about that cool and creamy chocolate soft serve that is so refreshing!
We don’t have a Wendy’s near our house, so imagine how excited I was to discover just how easy it is to make a copycat version of Wendy’s famous Frosty…no ice cream machine or ice cream maker needed! All you do is blend, freeze, and enjoy!
I’ve seen a few copycat recipes before with just 3 ingredients, but we added cocoa powder to ours for a little bit of extra chocolate flavor. Trust me, it makes all the difference and this is still an incredibly easy recipe to prepare, with simple ingredients that you might already have on hand at home.
This homemade chocolate frosty is icy, creamy, and packed with chocolate flavor. It makes a big batch so the whole family can enjoy…or you can keep it in the freezer and have a glass whenever you like! Mmmmm…
Frosty Ingredients
- 4 cups chocolate milk
- 8 ounces frozen whipped topping (such as Cool Whip)
- 7 ounces sweetened condensed milk
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
Kitchen Supplies Used
- Blender
- Loaf pan
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until well combined. At this point the chocolate mixture will look like thick chocolate milk or milkshake consistency.
- Pour the chocolate liquid into a loaf pan and into the freezer.
- Every 30 minutes or so, take the pan out and stir or whisk the mixture, and return to the freezer.
- After about 3 hours in the freezer, you’ll have the perfect frosty consistency! Scoop into a glass and enjoy!
Prep Tips
- Yield – This recipe makes enough soft serve for about 4 servings, depending on the size of your glasses.
- Dairy-Free Version – You can make this a non-dairy treat with a couple substitutions. First, use a dairy free chocolate milk, such as chocolate almond milk. Swap out regular condensed milk with sweetened condensed coconut milk. Finally, you’ll want to check the ingredients list for your whipped topping. Some brands use milk or cream in their topping, while others do not. There are some pretty tasty dairy-free whipped toppings available in the freezer section of the grocery store. You can use the same amounts of the dairy free ingredients and make this recipe with the same steps.
- Consistency – Our frosty is created so you can enjoy with a spoon and drink it with a straw as it melts…just like the original. For a thicker frosty, you may wish to freeze for an extra hour or so until you have your desired consistency. You can also use a little less chocolate milk, 3 cups instead of 4 cups milk. This will make the frosty thicker like soft-serve and you can eat with a spoon.
- Storage – You can keep your frosty mixture in the freezer for a few days and serve as needed. Be sure to cover the pan or keep in a freezer-safe container with a lid. Once it is completely frozen solid, you’ll want to thaw for 5-10 minutes, scoop into a blender, and blend to get it back to a soft-serve texture. After a week or so, the mixture may start to crystallize in the freezer.
- Pro Tip: If you’ve never tried dipping French fries into your frosty…do it!! Just trust me on this!!
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Use Whipped Cream Instead Of Whipped Topping?
Real whipped cream is delicious, but in this case I would avoid using it. Whipped topping (like Cool Whip) is made with stabilizers that keep it “fluffy” and that is what we want for our frosty. Real dairy whipped cream will turn to liquid over time, so it won’t hold up as well in this recipe.
Do I Need To Use Cocoa Powder?
You can absolutely make this recipe with just 3 ingredients: chocolate milk, whipped topping, and sweetened condensed milk. However, a little bit of cocoa powder adds a lot of chocolate flavor! You could alternatively use 1-2 Tablespoons of chocolate syrup.
