Sometimes when you’re a renter, it feels like you’re “stuck” with everything as is.
I admit I used to think why bother spending any time or money if this isn’t our forever home!
But there is just something about a beautiful home that makes you feel better, so I finally gave in and decided to make our home our own.
And you know what? It didn’t end up costing us much at all and it won’t be an issue when it’s time to move!
So I want to encourage you to do the same. Whether you live in a home for one year or for a decade, making it your “own” is well worth it!
Keep reading for 5 of my favorite easy home decor ideas that we use to make our house feel more like a home.
5 Easy Home Decor Ideas You Can Do in a Day
Here are some of the upgrades we made to our home that we quick, easy, and inexpensive. But as you can tell from the before/after photos, the difference is amazing!
Brighten a room with new curtains
I’ve always looked at curtains more as a functional item than a thing of beauty. They serve a purpose: keep light out at night.
However, when the folks at Minted invited me to browse their home goods, I immediately fell in love with these gorgeous blue ombre floor-length curtains. (Who knew! Minted offers so much more than cards!)
Minted connects you with talented artists to create one-of-a-kind designs for your home. I love that my order supports other small business owners!
Minted makes the curtain shopping process simple:
- Search for the type of item you want, in this case curtains (they also have pillows, wall art, and more!)
- Select your favorite pattern from hundreds of designs.
- Choose your options: color, length, and quantity.
Check out the before/after photo below. The ONLY changes are the curtains and curtain rods, but it makes the room appear brighter and more open. Why didn’t we do this sooner?!

Put your best face forward with a vibrant painted front door
Again, I’m kicking myself for not doing this simple switch a long time ago!
As you can see, our front door was not the most welcoming sight before. It was a basic, mud brown in desperate need of a fresh coat of paint.
My husband and I decided that if we were going to repaint, we might as well go bold! We went with a rich turquoise that would stand out, creating a focal point. (And drawing attention for other areas we haven’t gotten to yet, like the windows.)
Here’s how we did it:
- Wipe down surface of door to remove dirt and grime.
- Sand any rough spots (this step may or may not be necessary for you).
- Tape around the trim and cover glass windows.
- Apply paint and allow to dry. (We did two coats because the underlying color was pretty dark).
TIP: For best results, paint on a day when it’s not raining, preferably with low humidity.
Note: Some home websites recommend removing the door from its hinges before painting. We skipped this step to save time and because we only painted the front surface of the door.
A color-coordinated welcome mat and flowers are inexpensive additions that bring the whole look together.
Feel the love with a photo wall
This is one of the first updates we made when we moved into our home a few years ago.
Our entry hallway has a large open wall, just begging to be decorated. Since I adore photos, I decided to use this space to create a photo wall.
I picked up a bunch of different picture frames on sale — unique patterns and varying sizes make it more interesting. I filled the frames with photos of our family and friends.
Now every time we come home, the first thing we see are photos of our loved ones and most treasured memories. It’s such a simple way to instantly improve your mood!

Pillows
I might have a slight addiction to pillows…
In college I collected accent pillows and put them everywhere: bed, chairs, couches, you name it!
With Minted I was able to choose a pillow in a different pattern (polka dots) that matched the color of my curtains exactly. No guessing…it’s a guaranteed match! How cool is that?!
Add a pop of color with a painted accent wall
If you’ve ever lived in a rental house or apartment, then you know that the walls are almost always painted a plain beige color. Should you choose to paint a different color, you might be expected to paint back to beige when you move out, or pay from your security deposit (boo!)
That doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun with color! What we’ve done is to paint an “accent wall” in a few rooms. Like our front door, this creates a bright focal point that distracts from the other boring walls.
Since we only paint one wall, it’s a smaller area and not much trouble to repaint if you’re required to do so upon move-out. It also gives you the flexibility to use bolder colors than you would if you were putting it on all four walls.
