I put off redecorating my living room for way too long!

3 Tricks to Completely Redecorate Your Living Room (on a Budget)
- Choose a few key pieces to replace that will have the most impact
- Create a color palette to coordinate your look
- Change your layout to maximize the space
1. Choose a few key pieces to replace
Start by identifying your biggest need. For us, this meant replacing our couches (which were over a decade old!) We knew that this would take the biggest chunk of our decorating budget, so we wanted to keep as much of the rest of our furniture as possible to make it work.
Next, we identified what we could keep. These were items that we loved (the dollhouse my grandpa made for me, our bookshelves, etc.) as well as things that were still in good condition and didn’t need to be replaced (our end tables, area rug).
2. Create a color palette
Choosing a color scheme (2-3 colors) keep you focused when looking for items, and makes the finished space look cohesive — a neutral color (brown, gray, etc) and an accent color (or perhaps two).
Since we were not replacing every item in our living room, we chose colors based on the items we planned to keep, building on what we already had. Our neutral color would be dark brown, since this was the color of our large pieces like the bookshelves and area rug.
For our accent color we went with turquoise. We already had a small turquoise cabinet that we loved, and our front door is painted turquoise too.
Once we had colors for our living room, it was a lot easier to find items matched each other. I did targeted searches on Pinterest with keywords like “brown and turquoise living room” for inspiration. I then sent my favorite ideas to my Modsy Style Advisor to help her suggest buyable pieces to meet our needs.

3. Rearrange to maximize your space
Previously, we had our couches pushed against the wall around the perimeter of the room. This made talking to each other difficult — you had to shout across the room to be heard!
This completely open layout also allowed our girls’ toys to take over the space. The dollhouse and toy area was not separated from the rest of the living room, so as they played, toys spread out onto the rug and in front of the couches and TV. This made the room feel messy ALL the time!
We worked with our Modsy Style Advisor to try out new living room layouts without moving one single piece of furniture! She created 3D renders based on photos and measurements of our space that incorporated both the items we planned to keep, and things we wanted to buy.
The Modsy 3D renders are absolutely amazing because we could tell in advance where each item fit. That way when the new pieces were delivered, we already knew exactly where they belonged. Take a look at the detail in this comparison between one of our digital previews and the actual finished room:
We placed our new sectional couch in the center of the room and created a “seating” area that is much more cozy. The new “reading corner” where the dollhouse used to be is my favorite spot in the house now!

Our cozier seating arrangement opened up a space behind the couch for the dollhouse and play area. Now toys are contained and our living area feels neater.
