5 Ways to Improve Your Child’s Concentration
Is homework a daily struggle in your house? Does your child lose focus before finishing their assignments?
We’ve been there!
Now, I’m not going to lie and say that I would be excited about worksheets either if I were a kid. However, our teacher usually assigns what they believe will take about 20-30 minutes.
Except when your child has trouble concentrating, homework can take much longer!
Instead of turning homework into a battle, we looked for ways to make it easier…and they might not be what you’d expect!
These are five things that we do as a family that have significantly helped to improve our girls’ concentration, and they are things that any parent can duplicate in their own home.
1. Make Homework a Part of the Daily Routine
Even on days when her teacher does not assign specific homework, we have our daughter read a book of her choice for at least 30 minutes.
That way homework becomes a part of our everyday routine and is less likely to be met with resistance.
2. Remove Distractions
To improve your child’s concentration, it helps to create an environment free from distractions.
During homework time, we turn off the television and all electronics. If for some reason it happens to be loud in our family room, we have a desk set up in our extra bedroom where my daughter can go for peace and quiet.
3. Provide “Brain Food”
A rumbling tummy is one of the biggest distractions to any task, and homework is no different. It’s so hard to concentrate on anything when you’re hungry, or as we say in our family, “hangry.”
When my oldest daughter gets home from school, she always has a snack before starting homework. That way she’s fueled up and ready to do her best work.
What you eat can make a huge difference in how you feel, how well your brain functions, and even your mood! That’s why I look for after school snacks that are not only easy, but made with real, quality ingredients.
If you look at the ingredients list on a box of Michael Angelo’s Calzones, you’ll see that it’s all recognizable and easy-to-pronounce. There are no fillers, preservatives, or artificial flavors or colors — it is a meal you can feel good about serving your family.
But the best part about Michael Angelo’s new calzones is the flavor!
I kid you not, the pepperoni calzones taste SO much like the West Virginia Pepperoni Rolls I grew up with — except Michael Angelo’s are way easier to make!
That’s probably because Michael Angelo’s frozen meals are created using recipes passed down from Nonna Foti’s Sicilian kitchen over 100 years ago. They taste homemade because they’re made with kitchen-crafted recipes, with the same care that Nonna Foti used in her own cooking.
My girls loved Michael Angelo’s calzones and I’m sure these will be in the after school snack rotation often!

4. Give Kids a Brain Break
After a long day at school, the last thing a kid wants to do when they walk in the door is sit down and do more schoolwork.
Allowing kids a little bit of time to relax and get their mind off school actually helps them concentrate better when it’s time to get to work.

5. Make Sure Your Child Gets Enough Sleep
When I don’t get enough sleep (which happens a lot with a new baby), I feel a bit foggy. When your kids don’t get enough sleep, they’re not running at full steam either.
Most of us are familiar with the recommendation that adults get 7-8 hours of sleep a night, but did you know that children need more?
