Parents: Let Uber teen accounts Be A Helping Hand!

As a mom, I’m always trying to find balance between living my own life and helping my kids live theirs. A big part of that means shuttling the kids to and from school, sports and activities.

Houston is a very spread-out city with limited public transportation. It can take almost two hours to drive from one side of the metro area to the other! I don’t even want to know how much time I actually spend in the car just running everyone around! Sometimes I feel like all I do is drive.

And what about when two kids have an activity scheduled at the same time? I’ve done a pretty good job scheduling things out so far, but sometimes those drop-off and pick up times get pretty tight.

Plus, after all that driving, some days there’s not enough time to get home and cook dinner.

I know that I’m not alone because it’s one of the things that other parents share with me: just how stressful it is trying to get it ALL done in the limited hours of the day.

I bet that there are times when we’ve all wished there was an “Uber for teenagers” to provide our kids with reliable rides to activities, before and after school transportation services or a way to get to a friend’s house.

Well wish no more, because Uber just launched teen accounts! In times where parents are in a pinch, teens can request rides themselves once they’ve successfully been added to the family profile by a parent and accepted. That means more freedom for teens, and a helpful option for parents when you just can’t be in two places at once.

Just in time for the new school year!

What are Uber teen accounts?

Uber teen accounts allow teenagers to request rides while under parent supervision in their home city. While the minimum age to open an Uber account is still 18, with Uber teen accounts, the age requirement is 13 years old and it must be attached to a family profile controlled by a parent.

What I love about this new family profile setup is that it lets both parents and teens feel empowered and in control at the same time. Teens have the freedom to request their own rides, and parents receive notifications about every request, can track rides in real time and can even communicate with the driver.

The new Uber teen accounts can be used as school transportation, a way to get to after school activities when it conflicts with the family schedule, or ride to a friend’s house.

Another great thing about Uber teen accounts is that they can be used to build responsibility. Teens learn real-world skills, under parental supervision.

Our daughter went on her first Uber teen ride this weekend! We did a “test ride” where she went on an errand close by. That way she could get familiar with the app, and we could see how it all worked out. Everything went smoothly, and I loved seeing how excited she was to do something independently! This is definitely going to be handy for us as the fall sports season starts!

Can Parents Track Uber Trips?

As a parent, I’m always mindful about who is around my kids. Uber definitely took parents’ concerns into mind when creating teen accounts, which have a range of enhanced safety features:

  • Live trip tracking — Parents can follow along in the app from pickup to drop off (see above!), so you get to go along for the ride even when you’re not physically there. With Uber teen accounts, parents receive a notification when their teen requests a trip, as well as real-time status updates along the way.
  • Highly rated drivers — Teen accounts will always be matched with highly rated and experienced drivers who go through rigorous background checks. Parents can also communicate directly with the driver that their teen is riding with.
  • Always-on safety — PIN verification and RideCheck™ will always be automatically turned on and cannot be turned off. RideCheck™ is a feature that will message both you and your teen in the app if the ride goes off-course, stops unexpectedly, or ends early. Teens also have access to on-trip safety features, such as being able to call 911, contact Support, or report an issue through the app. Additionally, teen trips are destination locked, meaning drivers cannot change the destination of the trip — only you and your teen can do that.

What Happens To An Uber teen account When Teens Turn 18?

When your teenager turns 18, their teen account is converted to a standard account. However, it will still be on your family profile, and you can follow along on their ride in the app. That way your teen will have even more freedom as they head off to college, but you can still keep an eye on them. What a cool way to transition into adulting! Thinking back to my own college days before Uber existed, I can only imagine how helpful this would have been.

Deal Alert: Get 40% (up to $15) off 3 Uber Teen rides. Valid for the first 30 days for new users in select locations. See app for terms.
