We recently made our first trip to the local library. We drive by it every day, as it is less than five minutes from our house, but amazingly in the three years we’ve lived here we have yet to stop in! Today I thought I would share some photos from our first visit as well as our trick to never lose library books.
Lilu has always loved books, and we have usually purchased them for her to help build our home library, support the school cook fair, etc. However, she is such a voracious reader that she can finish an entire chapter book in a day(!!) so to keep up with her it would make sense to start frequenting our neighborhood library.
I don’t know why we didn’t go sooner — from the girls’ reactions this was obviously one of the COOLEST places they had EVER seen in their lives. Annabelle OOOOOH-ed the entire hour we were there, running up and down the kid’s section touching all the books. She might not have been the quietest patron (ok, she was probably the loudest), but she was just having so much fun!
Lilu was much more serious, thoroughly examining book after book and sitting down to take each one on a “test read” before adding them to her final pile. Her eyes sparkled when I handed over her very first library card with her name on it and she insisted that she could handle the check-out process by herself, which she did.
Once we got home, I realized that we were going to have to figure out a way to keep track of all these books! Grammy (my mom) had the excellent idea of creating a “library book box” where Lilu could keep all her borrowed books together (and out of Annabelle’s reach) when she wasn’t reading them.
Luckily I had a spare box that I hadn’t gotten around to throwing away that was the perfect size! Lilu and I sat down with her sticker collection and got to work decorating:
It’s such a simple idea, but so practical! Lilu loves having a personalized place to keep her special library books together and it has been very effective in ensuring that we don’t lose any — because she will be done with this stack and ready to switch them out by next week!
What are we reading this month? Here are some of our favorites:
Disclaimer: Spooky Spooky Little Bat was sent to us for review purposes by Parragon Books as a part of their Book Buddies Program. (It’s a finger-puppet book with a catchy rhyme– Annabelle loves it!) All others are ones Lilu picked out on her own at the library.

That box looks good. It just had a new use. I wish Lilu to have a great time in reading her books. 🙂

That’s what I thought too when my mom suggested the idea– “why didn’t I think of this sooner?” 🙂
