Cake Mix Snowman Cookies
These sweet snowman cookies are guaranteed to bring winter cheer to any holiday cookie spread! They’re easy to make with a 3-ingredient cake mix recipe!
Snowman Cookies
Christmas cookie making is one of my favorite holiday traditions. Growing up, our extended family would gather for an entire day of baking and decorating sugar cookies. It’s a tradition that I’m excited to pass on to my own kids!
These adorable snowman cookies are easy to make, so it’s the perfect winter cookie recipe to bake together with the kiddos. The base recipe is a 3-ingredient cake mix cookie recipe, which creates fluffy vanilla cookies. Then we decorated the cookies with white frosting and M&Ms to look like a cheerful snowman face wearing earmuffs. Or a “melting snowman” if you prefer!
The M&Ms are bright and shiny, just like the buttons described in the classic Christmas song “Frosty the Snowman.” They’re simple and cute and are actually a recipe that kids can help decorate. They don’t have to look perfect like the recipes you see on social media…that is the beauty of this recipe! Oh, and they are quite tasty too!
As much as I love traditional Christmas colors and cookies, these adorable snowman face cookies are so easy to make and they’ll add the perfect touch of winter fun to your holiday cookie exchange or for your family. In just four easy steps you can transform your favorite cookie recipe into this festive holiday treat!

- 1 Box Yellow Cake Mix (15oz)
- 1/2 Cup Vegetable Oil
- 2 Large Eggs
- Mini M&Ms
- White Cookie Icing
- Black Gel Icing or Decorating Icing
Helpful Kitchen Tools
- Large Mixing Bowl
- Large Baking Sheet
- Non-Stick Cooking Spray
- Wire Cooling Racks
- Silicone Baking Mat
Instructions
To Prep: Preheat oven to 350ยฐF and lineย a large baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, stir together the cake mix, oil, and eggs until well combined.ย Chill the dough in the fridge for 15-20 minutes.
- Form cookie dough into Tablespoon sized balls and place them on your prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the cookies just start to turn golden brown on the edges. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack before frosting.
- Use an offset spatula to generously cover the tops of the cookies with white frosting.
- Press the Mini M&Mโs into the white frosting to create the snowman’s eyes, nose, and mouth. We used brown M&Ms for the eyes and mouth and an orange M&M for the carrot nose. Use black icing to draw the earmuffs on top of the cookie.
Prep Tips
- We used pre-made cookie icing to save time, however, you are welcome to use your own favorite vanilla buttercream icing recipe if you like. You could also try something unique like marshmallow frosting. Be sure to let the cookies cool completely before applying frosting so that the frosting doesn’t melt at all.
- Instead of M&Ms, you can use similar colorful candy for decorating. You could also use orange icing instead of M&Ms and simply use decorating icing to draw on the faces.
- You can add flavor to your cookie by mixing in a spoon one of your favorite extracts, such as peppermint extract, vanilla extract, or almond extract. I would add about a teaspoon to the batter and see how that tastes.
- Get creative! You can make these cookies your own by adding sprinkles, drawing on a colorful scarf with frosting, etc. The kids can have a blast making their own melted snowman cookies with unique faces!
- Want to make your cookie platter look extra special? Place your cookies on a serving plate coated in powder sugar, like snow!
Frequently Asked Questions
What Kind of Cake Mix Should I Use?
We used a yellow cake mix for these snowman sugar cookies. However, you can use your favorite type of cake mix! To keep the same look, stick to a white or vanilla cake mix. You can also use homemade sugar cookies or a sugar cookie mix instead and decorate them like we did.
Do These Cookies Need Refrigerated?
If using butter cream frosting or regular cookie decorating icing, these cookies do not require refrigeration. Instead, keep at room temperature in an airtight container or cover with plastic wrap.
If you decide to use a cream cheese frosting, then the cookies will need to be stored in the refrigerator.
