Yay or Nay? The Coffee Nap

There’s been an article circulating the internet lately which purports that drinking coffee before a nap will actually make you feel MORE rested. Sounds counter-intuitive, but in the sleep-deprived haze of the newborn days, I was willing to try anything.

The so-called “coffee nap” goes like this: drink a cup of coffee (or in my case a shot of espresso) before you take a power nap. The caffeine won’t take effect for about 20-30 minutes, so you’ll get a short bit of solid rest and then wake up feeling alert as the java jolt kicks in. According to the article, it has something to do with how the caffeine interacts with a certain chemical in your brain…blah blah…all I care is if it works.

And it does. I’ve tried it on multiple occasions at various times in the day, and if I get out of bed when I start to feel the caffeine coursing through my veins, then I’m a champ — ready to take on the day. One time I was “lucky” enough that hubby was home to watch the baby and let me sleep longer — except that I went beyond the time when the caffeine levels peak and actually woke up feeling groggy.

So, if you find yourself with a few minutes that you actually might be able to get a little shut-eye, drink a cup o’ joe first. That way you’ll be rearing to go when the baby lets you know it’s time to wake up!
