The Best Cricut Joy Accessories
Tis the season…to get a Cricut!
Cricut machines are one of the most popular holiday gifts of 2020. With many of us spending more time at home, it’s the perfect opportunity for crafting. Cricut crafts are also an awesome side hustle to make a little extra cash!
But you can’t just get the machine by itself — you’ll need a few accessories to start making all the amazing crafts you’ve seen on Pinterest!
The good news is that you really only need a few basics to get started. Then you can add more to your collection over time.
But how do you know which items you really need?
Lucky for you, I’ve tried a lot of the different Cricut Joy accessories and I’ve narrowed them down to create a top 5 list.
These items are helpful if you’ve just bought your Cricut Joy, or if you’re putting together a gift bundle for a loved one.

My Top 5 Cricut Joy Must-Haves
Whether you’re looking to round-out your accessory collection, or put together a holiday gift bundle, these items are the ones I recommend for anyone with a Cricut Joy.
1. Cricut Joy Machine Mat
One of the awesome things about the Joy is that it can cut without a mat, when using Smart Vinyl materials specifically designed for the machine.
However, if you want to use other types of material such as cardstock or regular vinyl, you’ll need a machine mat.
For all around versatility, I recommend the standard grip mats. You may also want the light grip mat for delicate materials.
2. Basic Tool Set
This is a must-have no matter which Cricut machine you own!
These tools are designed to make weeding, trimming, and tidying tour projects easier.
For example, sometimes I catch myself trying to use my fingernails for weeding, but honestly, it’s much easier to use the tools!
I also love the scraper — it is a lifesaver for removing little stuck-on pieces of vinyl from your mat.
Bonus: When you purchase Essential Tool Set (instead of the Basic Tool Set), it includes the portable trimmer (#3 on my list)!
3. Portable Trimmer
Smart Vinyl is designed to fit perfectly in the Cricut Joy, without a mat. However, if using other materials, you may need to trim them to fit this smaller machine.
This handy little paper cutter makes cutting straight lines easy-peasy, so you can quickly trim your materials to fit on your Joy machine mats.
You may find yourself using it for other crafting projects too! A good paper cutter is a must in any craft room!
Bonus: It’s compact enough to be portable and could easily tuck into a purse or craft bag.
4. Cricut Joy Fine Point Pens
Just like its larger cousins, the Maker and Explore, the Cricut Joy can write as well as cut. It’s important to have pens that are just the right size to fit in the Joy tool clamp.
I always have black pens on hand because they go with everything. However there are over a dozen different types of pens, from metallic, to glitter, to gel pens, and even Infusible Ink pens!
5. Insert Card Mat
One of my favorite features of the Cricut Joy is the ability to create professional looking greeting cards. The Insert Card Mat makes the process totally foolproof!
The Cricut Joy Card Mat has a thick plastic sleeve that allows the machine to cut the top half of the card, leaving the bottom half untouched.
If you’re using Cricut Joy insert cards, they come with sparkly inserts (hence the name) that show through the design that you cut on the card itself. Here are some that I made:
One more thing…
I highly recommend getting a machine tote for your Joy!
Not only is the tote padded to protect your investment, it has a secure strap for easy and safe carrying.
Plus it’s super cute!
