Percy Jackson’s Blue Punch

Reading is one of our family’s favorite summer activities, especially when it’s too hot here in Texas to play outside.

Our oldest daughter is a huge fan of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by author Rick Riordan. Disney Book Group sent us the 5-book collection at the start of the summer — my daughter loves them so much she’s already on her second time reading them!

Percy Jackson books

What is the significance of blue foods in the Percy Jackson books?

I originally assumed that Percy’s favorite color must be blue, since his mom regularly makes blue-colored treats for him, like blue chocolate chip cookies.

However, my daughter corrected me: “Percy’s stepdad told Percy’s mom that there is no such thing as blue food. So to prove him wrong, she started making all kinds of blue foods!”

Now I know! 🙂

While the books specifically mention blue cookies, cakes, and candy, we thought it would be fun to make our favorite summer drink blue too!

Our blue lemonade turned out amazingly blue and delicious — I’m sure Percy would approve!

I’ve seen electric lemonade made as a grown-up cocktail recipe, but since we used the lightning bolt sprinkles I feel like it is the perfect name for our drink too! Except our electric lemonade is totally kid-friendly!

How to Make Blue Lemonade

We’ve included a quick video demo to show how to make our electric blue lemonade, plus there is a printable copy below the step-by-step directions.

This first step in making our blue lemonade is to cook up a simple syrup, which is used to sweeten the lemonade.

To make simple syrup:

Bring 1 cup of hot water to boil, then remove from heat.

Add 1 cup sugar and stir until completely dissolved.

mixing simple syrup

To make your blue lemonade:

Puree 1 cup blueberries and add the puree to simple syrup (while still hot) and let steep to get the color from blueberries.

making blueberry puree

Strain blueberry simple syrup into pitcher with 4 cups cold water and 1 cup lemon juice (fresh squeezed) and stir together.

Fill rest of pitcher with ice.
