Get your kids to unplug and let their imaginations run wild with these creative tween gifts! Tried and tested, these are some of our family’s favorite things: from art, to building, to books!
Magformers are a magnetic building toy and they are one of my absolute favorites for both of my girls (8 and 2). Just a few reasons why:
- Keeps the kids busy for hours
- A toy that both girls can play together (even with a 5 year age gap)
- Encourage practical engineering and critical thinking skills
The variety of Magformers sets means that there is something for everyone: different color schemes, themes, large sets, small sets, wheels, gears, and more. We have both the 100-piece Inspire set (the perfect base kit with lots of pieces) and the Magnets in Motion 37-piece set which features spinning gears.
Yo-Kai Watch “Model Zero” – by Hasbro *
Yo-Kai Watch is a hot kids TV show and role-playing game with lots of fun accessories and gadgets. The first time my daughter wore her Yo-Kai Watch Model Zero to the playground, she received compliments from the other kids. It’s definitely an eye-catcher!
The Model Zero looks like a large wristwatch and plays sounds and even projects short clips of characters in motion. Not gonna lie…it’s pretty cool! Additional medallions (sold separately) play new sounds and clips for their respective characters. I love how it inspires the imagination of my daughter, who acts out some of the moves along with the sounds.
Your Yo-Kai Watch fan might also love the Yo-Kai Watch Trading Card Starter Pack and Medallium Collection Book (for organizing and displaying cards and medals). This is a great gift idea for birthdays and holidays for school friends, cousins, etc.
Kwik Stix – by the Pencil Grip Inc. *
Kwik Stix are real tempura paint in solid form — essentially a combination of drawing and painting. Rich, bold colors apply smoothly and dry within 90 seconds. (Imagine the satisfyingly smooth feeling of writing with lipstick…it’s like that!)
It’s another activity that’s perfect for older and younger kids to do together because art transcends age. Plus, Kwik Stix are practically mess-free!
Kwik Stix come in a rainbow of colors, even neons and metallics! They blend well, so older kids (and adults) can create frame-worth artwork. Kiwi Stix are available at Target.com.
Check out this awesome way to display kids art!

Design and Doodle Coloring Book – Parragon Books *
Funky patterns that beg to be brought to life! Coloring not only inspires creativity, but relieves stress as well. It’s a healthy way for kids to unwind after a long day at school. This collection has hundreds of unique pages to color!

My all-time favorite colored pencil and the perfect accompaniment for a coloring book! Prismacolor pencils are supple, bright, and smooth — rich and blendable.
(I actually favored Prismacolors as an art student because of the high level of detail and realism you can achieve with them). The Prismacolor Premiere Colored Pencils 72-count is an excellent starter set.
Hail to the Chief – by Calista Gingrich *
Another adorable addition to the Ellis the Elephant Series by Calista Gingrich. The recent presidential election got everyone talking about politics, even kids. In Hail to the Chief, Ellis the Elephant meets some of America’s most influential presidents. Perfect for new and intermediate readers, Ellis the Elephant teaches kids about American history through catchy rhymes.
