Dog Ice Cream

Summer is in full swing here and it is HOT outside here in Texas! One of my kids’ favorite summer treats is ice cream – so I thought it would be fun to make dog-friendly ice cream for our Corgi, Wasabi.

Our dog ice cream recipe is made with just 3 simple ingredients and NO added sugar! It’s super easy to make and one batch will last for a while in the freezer.

This dog-friendly ice cream is also people-friendly too! It’s made with simple, real food ingredients and it actually tastes great – my kids and I both tried it and agreed! So if you’re looking for a healthy peanut butter ice cream recipe, this is one your and your pup can share!

Is It Healthy For Dogs To Eat Ice Cream?

Just like other types of treats, most dogs can enjoy ice cream in moderation. Of course, this means DOG ice cream that is specifically made for them – not human ice cream – which can contain lots of sugar and additives that are not good for dogs to consume.

That’s why I love this dog ice cream recipe – because I made it myself, I knowย exactly what is in it! And even though it is a treat that we only give to our puppy on occasion, there are some healthy benefits:

  • Greek yogurt is a good source of protein
  • Bananas are a good source of fiber and several vitamins and minerals
  • Peanut butter is a source of fiber and healthy fats

And as you can see, our puppy LOVES his ice cream!

If your dog has any allergy or health conditions, you may want to check with your vet first to make sure that these ingredients are ok in your specific situation.ย

Ingredients

  • 2 cups plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter (WITHOUT xylitol)*

*Look for a natural peanut butter that is made with just peanuts. While most peanut butters do not contain xylitol, it is important to check the ingredients because xylitol is dangerous for dogs.ย

Prep Tips

  • Yield – Depending on the size of your dog, this recipe will yield 4-6 servings. A 1/4 cup serving is perfect for a medium or large dog, while a smaller pup may do best with a 2 Tablespoon treat.
  • Variations – If you really want to make your dog’s day, try adding a sprinkle of bacon bits on top of their ice cream (be sure to use real bacon). You could also add a small sprinkle of cinnamon to the blender, which enhances the flavor and is said to aid in digestion. I’d recommend using 1/8 teaspoon or less for the whole batch.
  • Storage – Keep this homemade dog ice cream in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2-4 weeks.
