Puppy’s First Road Trip – Free Dog Travel Packing List
Planning a summer road trip with your new puppy? We’ve partnered with Merck Animal Health to share expert tips, along with a printable dog travel packing list.
Your Puppy’s First Road Trip
Our family welcomed a new member into our family earlier this year, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Wasabi. Now, we can’t imagine life without him, and that includes exploring our home state together!
Taking a road trip with a puppy can feel daunting, but it can actually be a breeze – and even a blast – with the right prep.
In this post, I’ll share our experience getting Wasabi ready for his first adventure, as well as what to pack in your puppy’s travel bag. I’ve even created a printable packing list to help you get started. So, buckle up and get ready to hit the road and make memories with your furry copilot!
Before You Travel With Your New Puppy:
To make sure that traveling goes smoothly, it is helpful to prepare ahead of time. This includes making sure your puppy is current on all of their vaccinations and preventatives, packing all their supplies, and practicing riding in the car on shorter trips.
1. Make Sure Your Puppy Is Up-To-Date On Preventatives
Nothing will spoil a trip into the great outdoors like bringing home unwanted guests. I’m talking about pests like fleas and ticks!
Not only are fleas and ticks annoying and itchy, but they are carriers for diseases and parasites. That’s why we never skip our flea & tick preventatives such as BRAVECTO® (fluralaner) Chews.
Since Wasabi is more than 6 months old now, he qualifies for the BRAVECTO® (fluralaner) Chews. I love that BRAVECTO® (fluralaner) Chews provides up to 12 weeks* of flea and tick protection with just one chew, which is nearly 3 times longer than one dose of monthly products. Plus, it is a fast-acting, safe and easy treatment.

Before you travel, you’ll also want to make sure that your puppy is up to date on all vet-recommended vaccinations, especially if they will be in an area frequented by other dogs
2. Take A Practice Trip
Before you go on a long trip with your puppy, it may be helpful to try a practice drive or two, so your puppy can get used to being in the car.
Our family recently took a trip to a nearby park for our “test drive.” When we got to the playground, Wasabi got to run around and play fetch with his favorite ball. He had so much fun! This made the car ride a good experience for him because there was a reward at the end of the trip.
Here are our three top puppy travel tips:
- Buckle up! – It is important to note that when traveling for any distance, you want to make sure to use a dog travel harness designed for cars or keep puppy in crate while car is in motion.
- Eat Lightly – To prevent motion sickness, you may want to feed your puppy a smaller than normal meal and give them a couple hours for digestion before you go anywhere. On days we travel with Wasabi, we feed him a small breakfast and then a bigger meal after we arrive at our destination.
- Don’t Pack Lightly – I highly recommend bringing a bag with all of your dog’s supplies. It’s better to overpack and have everything you need than to try to pack lightly and forget something.
What to Pack in Your Puppy Travel Bag
Here’s what I pack in my “puppy bag” when we take Wasabi on a road trip:
- Collar and ID tags (make sure your pup is wearing their collar any time you leave the home)
- Proof of vaccinations
- Leash
- Food
- Water
- Toys
- Feeding bowls
- Puppy pads
- Crate
- Blankets/towels
- Paper towels and cleaning supplies
- Plastic bags for picking up puppy poo
- First aid kit
- Vet contact information
It sounds like a lot, but it is so helpful to have anything and everything you can think of when you’re on the road!

Want to Know More About BRAVECTO® (fluralaner) Chews for Your Pup?
I can’t stress enough how important preventatives are for your dog!
It is so much easier to give them one little chewable every 12 weeks* than it is to try to get rid of fleas or ticks later. Your puppy will thank you for it!
