Our 22 month old daughter just started sleeping through the night (thanks to a recent breakthrough discovery we made!) However, she’s been a champ at nap time for a while and sleeps 2-3 hours in the afternoon every day. This allows me to get a lot of work done, both for my business and around the house, and I am so grateful for this time!
Creating a special and consistent routine for your toddler is key for nap time success.
Here are the five things we do that help our toddler nap for at least two hours every single day:
Look and Listen for signs your toddler is ready for a nap
Now that my daughter is talking, she will often tell me that she is ready for her nap: “Mama, I go night-night!” Before that, she would give very clear cues that it was time. Most toddlers do let you know, you just have to be paying attention. Rubbing ears and eyes, yawns, fussiness, laying down, or even pretending to put their own toys to sleep are all signs they’re ready for bed.
Make sure nap time is at the same time every day
Find a time that fits in your daily schedule and coincides with when your toddler starts to show “sleepy time cues” and make this your nap time. Try to stay as close to this time as possible, so your toddler’s internal clock will align with it. Once you make it a habit, their body will be ready for sleep at this same time every day, making things much easier.
Find comfort items that your toddler can look forward to seeing
We have certain stuffed toys and blankets that our daughter only gets to cuddle with at nap time. She actually gets excited to see them when we head over to her crib, and they make her feel right at home as soon as she lays down. Even if she doesn’t fall asleep immediately, she usually will play quietly or talk to her dolls until she drifts off into peaceful slumber.
Make nap time non-negotiable
As much as posible, don’t skip nap time! We try to plan our day around the afternoon nap, so that the routine is not disrupted. On the few days where we can’t avoid an appointment during what is usually reserved for our toddler’s nap, she starts to fall apart mid-afternoon. Everyone is happier when nap time happens when it is supposed to!
Ensure your toddler stays dry
A wet diaper will wake up your little one, and once they’re awake, that’s it for nap time! Choosing a diaper that keeps your toddler feeling dry and sleeping soundly is crucial to the success of your toddler nap routine. Huggies Snug & Dry diapers provide up to 12 hours of protection, so they’ll get you through nap time and then some! My little one is a fan because they feature her very favorite characters, but mom is a fan because they work!
We have had a Sam’s Club membership for a couple years now, largely because we save so much money buying our diapers in bulk! We save over $10 on Huggies Snug & Dry diapers by shopping at Sam’s Club, which really adds up! (If you’re not a member, click here to find out how to become one!) Find them in the baby section:
Now through 4/9/16, Sam’s Club members can save an additional $7 on Huggies Snug & Dry diapers with the Ibotta app. I am a huge fan of Ibotta because you save even more money on top of already low prices at Sam’s Club!
