3 Baby Safe Cleaning Tips for New Parents
When there’s a new baby in the house, a lot of things change.
Weekends change — Friday nights as new parents look pretty different than they did during the pre-baby years!
Sleeping in becomes a thing of the past.
But did you know that with a new baby your cleaning routine should change too?
Babies get into everything.
They crawl on everything and under everything. They touch everything. Annnnd of course babies try to put just about anything in their mouth.
With a new baby crawling around, you’ll quickly become an expert at spotting dirt and crumbs around the house — usually because your baby is trying to eat those crumbs!
Keeping a clean home with a new baby is important, but it’s equally important to make sure you’re cleaning as safely as possible.
Here are three things to keep in mind when you’re cleaning with a baby in the home:
1. Use Green Cleaning Products
Remember those bright green “Mr. Yuk” stickers from your childhood? My mom put those on all the cleaning products in our home — and for good reason!
Many commercial cleaning products contain harsh or even toxic chemicals, definitely not substances you want kids or pets exposed to.
If you have kids, pets, or a new baby in the home, consider using green cleaning products instead.
What Does Green Cleaning Mean?
“Green cleaning” refers to products that are formulated with primarily natural ingredients and are designed to be safer for both humans and the environment.
Benefits of Green Cleaning Products
- Reduces exposure to toxic chemicals in the household
- Green cleaning products are more environmentally friendly
- Safer to use around kids and pets
- Gentler on skin, especially sensitive skin
I’m loving the new Art of Green™ line of green cleaning products, available at H-E-B.
Art of Green™ cleaners are tough on dirt, grease, and grime, and leave behind less residue than other eco-friendly cleaners. (To be honest, I didn’t notice any residue at all!)
Did I mention they smell AMAZING?!
I can’t decide whether I like the Lavender Eucalyptus or Citrus and White Flowers fragrance better. They both make my home smell fresh and clean (no strong chemical odor like from other cleaners).
Yes, I received product to sample, but I can honestly say that these are the BEST smelling cleaning products I’ve ever used.
I have super sensitive skin, and have to be careful about the products I use. I can actually feel some products irritating my skin, but Art of Green™ cleaners are gentle so my hands don’t suffer.
Art of Green™ products are 98% naturally derived, biodegradable, and non-toxic*. They’re also free of parabens, phthalates, glycol solvents, artificial color or phosphates. The ingredients are clearly labeled on the back of the packaging, so you know exactly what is inside.
I appreciate this transparency and feel better knowing that my daughters aren’t exposed to a lot of harsh chemicals after I’ve cleaned the house.

2. Clean While Baby is Not in the Room
As a new mom, one of the “tips” you’ll hear often is to “sleep when the baby sleeps.” (Wouldn’t that be nice!)
You see, when my babies did nap, I often used that time to catch up on chores, exercise, etc.
With the baby asleep in their own bedroom, nap time is the perfect time to clean other parts of the house. That way the baby is not getting into anything while you’re trying to clean.
3. Ensure Proper Ventilation
With babies that don’t like to nap, I completely understand that there are times when you have to clean with baby in the room. If that’s the case, always make sure that the area is well-ventilated.
- Open windows if the weather permits
- Use a fan
- Run the air conditioner
- Use a room air purifier
Actually, making sure to well-ventilate any area you clean is a good rule of thumb whether or not there is a baby in the home. It’s for your own safety too!
