How to Detox Your Home
If you’ve been wondering how to eliminate chemicals from your life, you’re not alone!
It’s funny how priorities change as a parent. Ten years ago, I probably would have laughed at the idea of “detoxing” my house. However, now I have a house full of kids and pets and their health and safety is always on my mind!
With a house full of kids and pets, I’ve been looking for ways to go green and avoid potentially toxic products. My family’s health and safety are my top priorities as a parent!
Over the past couple years, our family has made some simple changes to start living a greener lifestyle and avoid potentially toxic products. These really are small changes, but they’ve made a big difference in how we feel!

1. Switch to Green Cleaning Products
If you’re looking into removing chemicals from your home, one of the most important places to start is by “going green” with your cleaning products.
We switched to green cleaning products after the birth of our youngest daughter. With a baby crawling around on the floor and putting everything in her mouth, I wanted to use the safest possible cleaning products and avoid harsh or toxic chemicals.
That’s when I discovered Art of Green® — a new line of green cleaning products available at H-E-B.
Art of Green products are 98% naturally derived, biodegradable, and non-toxic*. They’re also free of parabens, phthalates, glycol solvents, artificial color or phosphates.
I especially appreciate that the ingredients are clearly labeled on the back of the packaging. You can see exactly what is inside the products, as well as each ingredient’s purpose.
But what I love most about Art of Green products is how amazing they smell. There are two fragrances: Lavender Eucalyptus or Citrus and White Flowers and they both are heavenly! I’m not kidding…BEST SMELLING CLEANING PRODUCTS EVER!!
Even my husband thinks they smell nice, and he usually doesn’t like any of that smell-good stuff!
Another thing I noticed is how gentle Art of Green products are on my skin. Traditional cleaning products often irritate my hands, so I need to wear gloves while using them. I don’t have to worry about that with Art of Green™ because the products are non-toxic.
Most importantly, Art of Green products WORK! My house feels super clean and there’s no sticky residue left behind like I’ve noticed with some other green cleaning products.
*Art of Green™ products are not organic.

2. Use a Home Air Purifier
According to the EPA, the amount of indoor air pollutants are often 2-5 times greater than that of the air outdoors. Mold, dust, pet dander, smoke residue, and pollen are just some of the factors that may contribute to poor indoor air quality.
An indoor air purifier can drastically reduce the amount of pollutants and allergens in the air by trapping them in its filtration system. We have one in our home and it make a huge difference! I can actually tell when the filters need changed because my allergies start acting up.
3. Always Wash New Clothing and Bedding Before Using
During the manufacturing process, clothing and bedding may be treated with chemicals like formaldehyde. That’s why it’s so important to wash new clothes and linens as soon as you purchase them.
Washing new clothes and linens prevents those chemicals from coming into contact with your skin and from contaminating your household.
4. Avoid Artificial Home Air Fresheners
Air fresher sprays and mists often contain chemicals that aren’t necessarily good to breathe in all the time. Essential oils are a more natural alternative.
Note: Some essential oils may not be safe for use around pets, so always read labels first!
5. Get Rid of Weeds by Hand
There’s been a lot of media coverage in recent years about the dangers of pesticides and weed killers.
We get rid of weeds the old fashioned way like my Granny taught me — by hand, ripping the weeds and their roots out of the ground.
With a gravel driveway this is a big task, but I’d rather spend the extra time than spray harmful chemicals all over the area where my kids and pets play.
6. Plants in the Home
Not only are plants beautiful, but they are beneficial too! Because they take in carbon dioxide and replace it with oxygen, plants can improve the air quality of your home.
They are essentially mini air purifiers!
7. Cut Down on Plastic Use
One of the biggest ways we did this was by eliminating plastic water bottles as a grocery. Instead, we purchased sturdy reusable water bottles and fill them up from our water filter.
This helps reduce your carbon footprint too!
8. Use Natural Pest Control
Just like outdoor pesticides, indoor pest control products often contain harsh chemicals. With kids and pets we try to avoid this as much as possible!
We have both a natural ant killer and natural roach bait recipe that we use and they are super effective! Our natural ant spray has gotten rave reviews from readers!
9. Take Off Shoes Upon Entering the Home
Shoes track in all kind of yucky stuff — dirt, bacteria, and other outside contaminants.
We set up shoe cubbies in our front hallway and made it a rule to take off shoes as soon as you step inside. Not only does this help with removing chemicals from your home, but it keeps the floors cleaner longer too!
10. Turn Off Your Cell Phone at Night
Our cell phones are almost always by our side, but one place they shouldn’t be is by your bed at night. That’s because cell phones can disrupt sleep patterns with both sounds and light.
The World Health Organization even cautions that cell phones produce radio frequency electromagnetic fields, and that these may be dangerous if we’re exposed to them all the time.
