Celery Bugs – Healthy Kids Snack Idea

If you’re looking for a way to make healthy snacks that will actually get eaten, these celery critters are a guaranteed hit! They’re easy to assemble, endlessly customizable, and a fun way to get kids involved in the kitchen. Whether you’re making them for a birthday party, packing them into lunchboxes, or serving them as an after-school treat, these cute little critters are guaranteed to bring smiles…and empty plates!

One of my favorite things about this snack idea is that you can make both sweet and savory versions. For a sweet treat, fill the celery with peanut butter and decorate with grapes, berries, and other fruit to create colorful insects. If you prefer something savory, cream cheese pairs perfectly with cherry tomatoes, olives, and vegetables for caterpillars. It’s an easy way to sneak a few extra fruits and veggies into snack time while letting kids play with their food in the best possible way.

We like to use celery hearts for this recipe because they’re naturally tender and already the perfect size for little hands. Unlike larger outer stalks, celery hearts don’t have as many tough strings, making them easier to eat and more enjoyable for kids. With just a few simple ingredients and a little creativity, you’ll have a platter full of edible bugs that are almost too cute to eat…almost!

Ingredients

These are some of the ingredients that we used, but you can totally get creative with it!

  • Celery hearts
  • Creamy peanut butter
  • Cream cheese
  • Seedless grapes
  • Blueberries
  • Grape tomatoes
  • Apple slices
  • Lime juice
  • Pretzel twists
  • Candy eyeballs

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Ingredients – Slice the apples and place into a bowl of lemon juice or lime juice to prevent browning. Be sure to remove any seeds that you find! Cut the celery into sections about 3-4 inches long.
  2. Add the Filling – Depending on whether you’re making sweet or savory snacks, fill the celery hearts with peanut butter or cream cheese. You want to make sure that the celery is a bit over-filled so you can press the fruit and/or tomatoes in place and they will stay.
  3. Decorate – Create your cute critter snacks by topping the peanut butter filled celery with grapes or blueberries to make caterpillars, pretzel twists to make butterflies, and sliced apples to make snails. If using cream cheese, add tomatoes to make caterpillars.
  4. Finish – To make the bug snacks look even more life-like, you can add candy eyes. Add a little dollop of peanut butter to the back of each eye to hold it in place.

Prep Tips:

  • Safety – It is generally recommended to cut grapes in half lengthwise for children under 5 years of age. The same goes for grape tomatoes. If doing so, simply place the cut side down in the peanut butter, so the visual effect is similar.
  • Serving – To help keep your celery bugs standing upright, assemble them directly on the serving platter whenever possible, as they can tip over when moved. For extra stability, carefully trim a thin slice from the rounded underside of the celery to create a flat base, before decorating.
  • Storage – Keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 days.
