Kitchen Supplies
- Saucepan
- Medium Mixing Bowl
- Wire whisk
- Plastic shot glasses — We used the tall 2oz size to make room for 4 layers
- Baking sheet or muffin pan
Instructions
The jello shots are made in 3 layers and you’ll need to allow a little time for each layer to set before you make the next color. I recommend giving yourself at least 3 hours to prepare this recipe (though a lot of that time is simply waiting for the layers to chill and not actual “work” time).
To Make The Green Layer:
- In a medium saucepan over medium high heat, bring 1 cup water to a boil. Add the watermelon jello mix to the water and whisk until jello dissolves.
- Stir in the cold water and vodka.
- Pour the green jello mixture evenly into your plastic shot cups, about 1/3 of the way.
- Place the jello shot cups on a tray and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours, or until set.
To Make The White Layer:
- In a medium bowl combine 1 cup of water and the unflavored gelatin. Stir and let sit for 5 minutes.
- Add the sweetened condensed milk and Baileys Irish Cream to the mixing bowl and stir to combine.
- Pour the white jello mixture into the cups, on top of the green layer, so that the cups are now 2/3 of the way full.
- Place the tray of jello shots back into the fridge until the white layer is set.
To Make The Orange Layer:
- In a medium saucepan bring 1 cup water to a boil. Stir in the orange jello mix until dissolved.
- Stir in the cold water and whiskey.
- Pour the orange jello mixture on top of the white layer, so the cups are almost full.
- Place the tray of jello shots into the fridge to chill until completely set.

Prep Tips
- Garnish your completed jello shots with a dollop of whipped cream. St. Patrick’s Day sprinkles would be fun too! I recommend waiting until you’re ready to serve before you add these finishing touches.
- If you want to simplify this recipe a bit, you can skip the vodka in the green layer and simply use 1 cup of cold water (instead of 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 cup watermelon vodka). Alternatively, you can omit the whiskey in the orange layer and simply use 1 cup of cold water for that step (instead of 1/2 cup whiskey and 1/2 cup cold water).
Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Do Jello Shots Take to Set?
I find that jello shots generally take anywhere from 2-4 hours to set. This recipe is done in layers, and since the layers are fairly thin, each layer should only take about 30 minutes of fridge time.
Altogether, I’d recommend allotting 30 minutes of prep time and 2-3 hours of chilling time to make this recipe.
Can You Freeze the Jello to Make it Set Faster?
It may be tempting to pop the jello shots in the freezer to make them set faster, but don’t do it! Freezing alters the texture of the gelatin and can cause it to crystalize.
What you can do is make sure that your fridge is on its lowest setting. Also, just like you shouldn’t open the oven door when baking, you don’t want to open the fridge door every 5 minutes to check on the jello shots’ progress. Give them at least 30 minutes to chill before checking to see if a layer has set.
