Green Irish Margaritas

When you think about St. Patrick’s Day drinks, tequila probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But hear me out!

This green margarita recipe is a vibrant color and delicious blend of smoky tequila, smooth Irish whiskey, and bright citrus flavors. It’s a fun new green cocktail to try for St. Patrick’s Day!

Is It REALLY a Margarita?

A classic margarita has three main ingredients:ย tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice. This cocktail has all three of those must-have components, but we added a couple extra touches and a bright green color to make this so much more than a typical margarita!

Prep Tips

  • To make your drink even more festive, you can rim the glass with gold sugar crystals or green sanding sugar. It will give the drink a little hint of sweetness and even more fun color!
  • To make this a pitcher, quadruple the ingredients and stir together in a large drink pitcher. Keep in the fridge until you’re ready to serve, then pour into ice-filled glasses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Best Tequila for Margaritas?

There’s really no “right” tequila for margaritas and you don’t need to spend a ton of money to make a delicious drink. What I do recommend is choosing a tequila that you could drink on its own, because the better the tequila itself tastes, the better the margarita will taste!

For this particular recipe, I recommend using a silver tequila (tequila blanco) since the Jameson already has a golden color. That way you don’t need to use a lot of food coloring to get the bright green look.

What Is Irish Whiskey?

Put simply, Irish whiskey is whiskey that’s made in Ireland. There’s a little more to it than that, such as requirements for alcohol volume (40% minimum) and that the whiskey must be barrel-aged for at least 3 years.

Irish whiskey is known for its smooth flavor and Jameson is one of the most well-known and readily accessible brands, which is why we used it in this recipe. However, you’re welcome to use your favorite type of Irish whisky in this drink!

Can You Make This A Frozen Margarita?

This recipe was originally prepared on the rocks, but you could absolutely modify to make it a frozen cocktail. I’d start by tripling the ingredient amounts and adding to a blender with 1-2 cups ice and add more ingredients as needed if you have room in your blender.

Just keep in mind that when you make a frozen margarita, the ice is in small pieces and will dilute the drink a bit quicker.

Another trick you could try is to freeze sweet and sour or margarita mix and use those frozen cubes instead of ice. That way the drinks won’t get watered down.
