bright green "Welsh Dragon" cocktail, inspired by Disney Rose & Crown pub

The Welsh Dragon

Disney’s EPCOT theme park is famous for its food — its World Showcase features 11 pavilions, each representing a different country. One of those pavilions spotlights the United Kingdom. And what would this British pavilion be without a classic British pub?!

Rose & Crown is a British style pub in the British Pavilion at EPCOT. One of its most famous drinks is The Welsh Dragon, a bright green concoction that is a blend of fruit flavors, tasting like a ripe melon. It is a drink that is as pretty to look at as it is to drink!

Even if you can’t get to EPCOT, this copycat Welsh Dragon recipe lets you get a taste of the fun and festivities! Enjoy the tropical flavors, close your eyes, and imagine yourself in a bustling British pub or at Disney…or wherever is YOUR happiest place on earth!

With its vibrant green color, this also makes a fun St. Patrick’s Day cocktail! I know, I know…that is an Irish holiday and this is a Welsh-inspired drink…but the color is just perfect isn’t it??

Why is it Called “The Welsh Dragon”?

While I haven’t found any official confirmation on the name, the Welsh flag offers a pretty big clue. Wales is one of four countries that make up the United Kingdom. The UK is a sovereign state, but each of its members are still considered countries in their own right (though not technically independent). Therefore, each country has its own flag.

The Welsh flag features a prominent red dragon on a green and white background. Again, I haven’t been able to pin down any official word on this, but my guess is that the “dragon” in the name refers to the dragon on the Welsh flag and the green color of the drink could also likely be inspired by the flag.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Peach Schnapps
  • 2 oz Melon Liquor (such as Midori)
  • 1 oz Green Creme De Menthe
  • 3 oz Orange Juice
  • 3 oz Pineapple Juice

Ingredient amounts are per serving — I recommend a 16oz glass for this, so there is plenty of room for ice. This is a pretty big drink, just like they serve it at Disney, so keep that in mind. Please enjoy responsibly! (21+)

There are instructions below to make a pitcher as well.

Bartender Tools Used

bright green beverage with ingredients listed on the image (peach schnapps, Midori, creme de menthe, OJ & pineapple juice)

Directions

These directions are to make one serving:

  1. Add ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Shake vigorously for 5-10 seconds, then strain into a large glass of ice.
  3. Garnish with an orange slice and maraschino cherries.

Note: This drink should be bright green on its own, due to the green melon liquor and green creme de menthe liquor. However, you can always add a drop of green food coloring if needed. Depending on the brand of liquor used, the green coloring may or may not be as vibrant as pictured here.

How to Make a Pitcher

To make a pitcher (which would be 4-6 servings, depending on how big the glasses are), multiply ingredient amounts by 4 and add to your pitcher. Stir well to mix.

Keep the pitcher in the fridge until ready to serve. Do not add ice until pouring into individual glasses, to avoid watering down the drinks.

Can You Make this Drink Non-Alcoholic?

This is a recipe that can easily be made family-friendly with a two simple switches:

  • Omit the creme de menthe
  • Substitute green honeydew melon syrup (non-alcoholic) for the melon liquor

Mix the honeydew melon syrup with orange and pineapple juices and garnish with fruit.
