Whipped Piña Coladas

The piña colada is a classic tropical drink and probably one of the most popular cocktail recipes out there! It doesn’t necessarily have to be a frozen drink, but it is especially delicious when it is prepared that way!

Our frozen piña coladas are extra light and fluffy, they’re almost “whipped” in consistency! Sweet pineapple juice is blended with coconut milk, cream of coconut, and ice to create a refreshingly smooth and icy concoction. Add a splash of rum and you’ve got yourself a drink!

The Piña Colada was invented in Puerto Rico. It’s truly a taste of the tropics…and all you need to take a tropical vacation is your blender!

Prep Tips

  • Try it with our pineapple whipped cream! To make pineapple flavored whipped cream, combine 1/4 cup pineapple juice and 2/3 cup heavy whipping cream in a medium mixing bowl. Whip with an electric mixer for 4-5 minutes, until stiff peaks form.
  • Add an ounce of fresh lime juice to the blender when mixing the cocktail for a little bit of extra flavor. Lime juice helps balance out the sweetness of the drink.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Make this a Non-Alcoholic Drink?

Absolutely! Simply omit the rum to create a family-friendly non-alcoholic version of this frozen drink. If needed, you can add a Tablespoon of extra pineapple juice in its place to keep the perfect texture.

TIP: Another pineapple soft-serve treat that kids can enjoy is our Copycat Dole Whip. It’s just like the famous Disney frozen dessert and essentially a virgin pina colada.

What is the Best Rum for a Piña Colada?

Generally, I recommend light or white rum because it is clear in color and mild in flavor. However, there are a few other options that would also work well.

Coconut rum, such as Malibu, would blend perfectly with this drink and enhance the flavor of the coconut milk. Spiced rum is also a favorite.

A fruit-flavored rum could make this drink extra sweet and fruity. Almost any flavor would taste fabulous, so you can experiment to find your favorite.

Can You Use Coco Lopez?

If you’re wondering about substitutions, Coco Lopez can be swapped out for the coconut cream and sugar. Coco Lopez is essentially a sweetened cream of coconut and popular choice for tropical drinks.

You can also add pineapple chunks to the blender for extra fruit flavor, but you’ll want to make sure to still use the juice so your frozen pina colada is not too thick to drink.

What is the Best Glass for a Piña Colada?

Traditionally, you might find pina coladas served in hurricane glasses. However, you can serve them in anything really! We used mason jars here and they looked really cool. If you’re making this pina colada recipe for a crowd, you may want to use plastic cups so guests can drink worry free.
