- Cool Whip (or similar whipped topping) โ You’ll need the 8oz tub, thawed to soften before using.
- Graham cracker pie crust โ Regular size, pre-made crust
You’ll also needย โ cup boiling water andย 1 cup ice water to make the Jello.
Instructions
- Whisk together Jello mix and boiling water in a large bowl, until fully dissolved. Stir in the ice cold water.
- Add cool whip to bowl of Jello mixture.
- Whisk briskly until smooth and fluffy. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes to set up slightly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Does Homemade Jello Pie Last?
Any leftovers should be kept refrigerated for up to a week. I recommend covering the pie or slices with plastic wrap to prevent the pie from taking on any flavors of other food in the fridge. This will also keep the edges from drying out.
Can You Use Sugar Free Jello?
If you look at the nutrition information estimates for this recipe, you may be pleasantly surprised to see that a single slice is under 200 calories.
However, if you’re looking to reduce the sugar content, you can simply swap sugar free jello for the regular jello in this recipe.
Can You Use Another Jello Flavor?
Of course! Cherry is my favorite flavor of Jello, so that is my go-to when making Jello pie! However, you are welcome to use any flavored gelatin that you like.
Here are some fun ways to use different flavors of Jello:
- Raspberry for Valentine’s Day
- Purple jello for Mardi Gras
- Key lime pie for St. Patrick’s Day
- Blue raspberry for a boy baby shower
- Strawberry jello pie for a girl baby shower
- Orange jello pie for fall
Try a different flavors for every occasion! You could even make a rainbow of pies for a large event!
Can You Make Your Own Crust?
We used a pre-made crust so this would be an easy, no bake dessert recipe. And sometimes baking a crust is the trickiest part of making pie!
However, if you want to use your own graham cracker crust recipe that is totally ok too!

I”ve tried this jello recipe at least 4 times, and only had it set once. I’ve done exactly what it says and it doesn’t set. Can you give me advice. I let it sit in refrigerator for 30 minutes before putting in shell and it still doesn’t work. I use ice cold water (1 c.) and 2/3 c. boiling water, with 1 (8 oz.) Cool Whip. What is going on?
I’ve made this 100+ times, and it’s never failed. I NEVER put it in the frig for 30 minutes. I always pour it right in the crust. I always have more than what will fill the crust, so I pour the rest into the cool whip container, and that’s for a little snack!! Try that and see if it works for you. I do use more ice, than water in that 1 cup.
So I made this recipe and it was a complete flop!! I left the my jello pie chill in the fridge for like five hours and it was still runny, I did not set at all! Taste great but did not Turn out right.. I honestly shouldโve made a jello fruit salad or cheesecake instead..
Made this many years ago my family loved it, now I will be making it for my grandkids
I have used this recipe for MANY years. Got it from a cooking presentation I went to. I have made it MANY times The last 2 times I have made this I followed the recipe to a T and it decided not to set up totally any help
RE: Jello pie
Can this be made from sugar free Jello?
Have a fun day!
Yes, you can use sugar free jello.
Thank you so much for sharing this amazing recipe!! I subbed the jello with sugar free, and used sugar free cool whip, and used raspberry jello. It is AMAZING. I know your og recipe is probably even yummier, but what a great idea. I can’t wait to try other flavors. We also put some berries and a tad of whip cream on it. You are such a gift and I am going to check out your other amazing recipes. Love and light to you.
So glad you loved this recipe! Thank you for letting me know!
Ive made similar versions, but this simply did not work. The jello and the cream kept separating.
Did you use Cool Whip/whipped topping or real whipped cream? I ask because I’ve only made this recipe personally with Cool Whip.
Just make a Jello cake it’s easy to make. One white cake mix any flavor jello bake cake as directed on box let cake cool completely , make jello as directed, poke holes in cake then pour jello over cake and refrigerate cake over night next day add a tub of cool whip on top of cake and enjoy
Thank you for the suggestion!
Made this for my grandkids and it turned out like jello soup! The whipped cream and jello never really came together. It seperated. I got a creamy top and watery bottom. The jello never truly set.
Did you use dairy whipped cream? If so, that could be the issue. This recipe calls for whipped topping, which is Cool Whip (or generic version).
Could you add cream cheese also?
I haven’t personally tried it, so can’t say for sure how much to use and if it would still set up correctly. If you do try it, let me know!
My jello and whip cream also comes out like soup does it have something to do with the ice water
how long is the pie good for? I would like to make this for a party but i am limited on time. how many days in advance can i make the pie?
You could probably make it 2-3 days in advance and keep covered in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.
Jello soup. Will not set. Followed to a T but no luck.
