The magic, of course, is the vibrant green hue, achieved with a touch of food coloring, making them the perfect centerpiece for your St. Patrick’s Day dessert table. Topped with a luscious cream cheese frosting and you’ve got a dessert that’s as delicious as it is festive.
What Is Green Velvet Cake?
Green velvet cake (or in this case, brownies) is just like red velvet cake, except green food coloring is used instead of red food coloring. The flavor is primarily chocolate, with a hint of a tangy taste that comes from the addition of vinegar. Buttermilk is also used to get this tangy flavor in some recipes.

Prep Tips
- Yield – This will depend on how large or small you cut the brownies, but we got 9 servings.
- Food Coloring – You can use your favorite type of food coloring for this recipe. If you want to avoid artificial dyes, this is a good plant-based food coloring option. I recommend starting with a few drops, stirring, and seeing how the batter looks before adding more. You can always add more food coloring, but if you add too much, you can’t take it away.
- Storage – Once frosted, the brownies will need to be refrigerated, as the icing contains cream cheese (dairy). They should keep for 3-4 days in an airtight container in the fridge.
