How to Choose the Best Sunglasses for Your Face

"Soccer Mom Style" and Fashion Tips for Moms

This guide to choosing the best sunglasses for your face brought to you in collaboration with ACLens.

I never leave home without my sunglasses! They’re my secret weapon to looking chic and “put-together” even if I didn’t wear makeup. Oh, and they protect my eyes from the blazing Texas sun!

I do most of my shopping online, but choosing the best sunglasses for your face seems scary at first when you can’t try them on. However, there’s a little trick to picking the perfect pair that will make the process almost foolproof!

How to choose the best sunglasses for your face

The key to finding the right frames is to figure out which of the four main face shapes you are: oval, heart, round, and square.

You can do this by looking in a mirror or by taking a photograph and tracing around the outline of your face.

Here’s a visual guide to give you an idea of what each face shape looks like, as well as one of the most flattering frame styles for each:

OVAL Face Type

Characteristics: An oval face is longer than it is wide. This is the most versatile face type, and can wear most frames. You’ll have the best results with frames that compliment your facial features.

Best frames:

  • oversized
  • aviator
  • retro
  • wayfarers

HEART Face Type

Characteristics: A heart-shaped face is wide at the top, swooping downward to a pointed chin. The most flattering frames will also be wider at the top and narrow on the bottom. Avoid heavy frames or chunky styles that can overwhelm the delicate features of a heart-shaped face.

Best frames:

  • cat’s eye
  • sporty, athletic
  • aviator

ROUND Face Type

Characteristics: A round face is closer to a circle than an oval, though it doesn’t necessarily need to be a perfect circle. A round face is widest at the cheekbones. Frames with defined angles balance out the roundness of this facial type. Avoid round frames, which can make the face look wider.

Best frames:

  • square
  • rectangle
  • wayfarer
  • cat’s eye

SQUARE Face Type

Characteristics: A square face is the most angular of the four types, with a well-defined jawbone. Choose round frames or styles with curved edges to soften the overall look. Frames that are slightly wider than your face also add balance.

Best frames:

  • aviator
  • round
  • shield
  • wraparound

What I’m Wearing

Lulu Guiness L104 – available at ACLens.com

My face is oval in shape, and theoretically I could wear almost any frame. However, I feel most comfortable in classic styles.

I usually go for slightly oversize frames with smooth edges. Black is my color of choice, but I love a pop of color. These frames actually have red polka dots on the side — fun and playful, but still subtle enough that you can wear them anywhere.

The most important thing to keep in mind when choosing frames is your own personal style. Your sunglasses should fit seamlessly with the rest of your look, and make you feel like a million bucks when you put them on.
